SQuIRREL: Trainee Event Reporting

Resident event reporting is an issue in centers around the country, and an interdisciplinary trainee team led by Dr. Katy Hicks is seeking to change that. The SQuIRREL (Subcommittee on QI Event Reporting & Resident-Engaged Learning) project started off with surveys showing that only 5% of trainees regularly reported events (56% rarely reported, 39% never reported) due to barriers including lack of knowledge of system, cumbersome interface, and lack of belief in reporting creating change.

To take this on, Dr. Hicks and her team have made reporting how-to pocket guides for trainees & posters to hang in resident work areas. They’re ensuring that trainees see the results of their reporting by making sure feedback is provided for any reports requesting it. They’ve also created a new institution-wide “Safety Nut” newsletter highlighting resident-submitted reports leading to system changes, with rewards for residents whose reporting is selected.
