A significant amount of the work we do in libraries is to help bolster information literacy. Part of this is situating learners so that they
understand that many disciplines have acknowledged authorities in the sense of well-known scholars and publications that are widely considered “standard,” and yet, even in those situations, some scholars would challenge the authority of those sources (ACRL Information Literacy Framework)
As part of this effort, libraries carefully put together subject guides. These are a curated collection of resources, portals to different types of information — articles, books, primary sources, media and pop culture, news sources, etc. — that are relevant to a specific academic discipline of inquiry.
The idea behind this sort of collection is to limit the sheer amount of information you need to comb through to find what you need. Further, it does highlight sources within your discipline that are “standard”, so that you have an easier time entering into the intellectual world of your field.
Today we are highlighting our recently revamped Gender and Sexuality subject guide. Take a look — did you know that we have access to
- a Queer Zine Archive,
- a Music and Social Justice collection that focuses on how rallies and performances use music to address social conflict
- and books such as Butler’s Undoing gender,
to name a few of the important resources you have access to? The journals Feminist Studies, GLQ: A Journal of Gay and Lesbian Studies, and Transgender Studies Quarterly are also some of the journals that are available online with your UWNet ID login.
