Build community, reduce isolation and enhance campus education by joining a peer-based book club! The UW Tacoma Library, in collaboration with the Center for Equity and Inclusion, is pleased to announce that its award-winning social justice book club, Real Lit[erature], will meet remotely in Fall Quarter 2022!
The goals of Real Lit have always been to create greater awareness and discussion of the experiences that are being had by our students, staff, and community members. Interacting with narratives that reflect different experiences has provided opportunities for dialogue with peers about both shared and disparate experiences.
Students, Faculty, and Staff are welcome to join. We strive to be an actively anti-racist space and spend the first session on October 6th crafting and reviewing community agreements.
We are reading Bethany C Morrow’s A Song Below Water!
“In a society determined to keep her under lock and key, Tavia must hide her siren powers.
Meanwhile, Effie is fighting her own family struggles, pitted against literal demons from her past. Together, these best friends must navigate through the perils of high school’s junior year.
But everything changes in the aftermath of a siren murder trial that rocks the nation, and Tavia accidentally lets out her magical voice at the worst possible moment.
Soon, nothing in Portland, Oregon, seems safe. To save themselves from drowning, it’s only Tavia and Effie’s unbreakable sisterhood that proves to be the strongest magic of all.”
Meetings will be completely remote, via Zoom: Thursdays 12:30-1:20 beginning 10/6.
Zoom link will be forthcoming after sign ups.
Please note: Real Lit is completely optional and you will not be graded. Students receive copies of books on a first-come, first-serve basis.
