As a library one of the main values engrained in our work is accessibility; specifically accessibility to the information and resources needed by the communities we serve. This includes ensuring our spaces are accessible to our communities and, as an academic library, making accessible and welcoming study spaces. At UW Tacoma Library we are excited to announce a new sensory-friendly space to better address the barriers faced by our neurodivergent students and promote diversity, equity, inclusion, and accessibility in our library spaces!
The space will open on Thursday, July 25th, and will be available every Thursday from 1:30 to 4 pm for the summer quarter. Days and hours may shift in the fall quarter. Initial items purchased for the room seek to address the different facets of overstimulation and create a genuine space of joy, respite, and belonging. The room will include fluorescent light covers of the night sky to make the room lighting sensory-friendly and create a calming atmosphere. There will also be dimmable desk lamps so students can adjust the light to their specific needs. There will be a white noise machine and noise-reduction headphones to reduce outside noise disturbance and overstimulation. Multiple different seating options will be available including a beanbag, wobble chair, yoga ball chair, and floor cushions. Lastly, there will be fidget gadgets and small lap-weighted blankets to help ease anxiety and stress. As the sensory-friendly space progresses and we gain feedback, we hope to continue building upon the resources the room has available.
Although the room has been created with our neurodivergent community in mind, everyone is welcome to use the space to chill out, relax, and escape the sensory overload that can be school and life! We look forward to seeing everyone in the Sensory Friendly Space starting July 25th!
