Fantastically Diverse: The Newest YA Display at the UW Tacoma Library

Sign that reads: "Fantastically Diverse" to promote the new young adult display in TLB

Looking for your next fantastic read?

The UWT Library has you covered! Our newest display, Fantastically Diverse, is now up in our young adult section on the first floor of TLB. Each book included in the display sits above a shelf talker (which includes a brief description of the book’s contents) and is available for checkout.

The display features incredible fantasy, speculative fiction and science fiction books that center diverse characters. Inspired by Ebony Elizabeth Thomas’s The Dark Fantastic (2019), in which she explores race in popular children’s and young adult fantastical works, we’ve purposefully sought to include books that uplift protagonists of color as well as protagonists of other marginalized groups. We’ve also noted which of the books we’ve read for Real Lit[erature], our award-winning social justice book club founded and run in collaboration with the UW Tacoma Center for Equity and Inclusion. Real Lit[erature] seeks to create greater awareness and discussion of experiences being had by our students, staff and community members and is open to all folks affiliated with the university.

Why stop by?

By including a broad range of diverse reads, we hope folks will find themselves represented in these stories as well as engage with characters unlike them—characters whose perspectives are critical but are too often sidelined or outright disregarded.
