CEE Ugrad Weekly: AUT21 Updates | Mentoring Sessions | Graduating Seniors | Connecting with your advisers

Hello CEE Majors,

We’ve got a few updates below but I wanted to reiterate the importance of your degree audit. Your Degree Audit (DARS) is the tool that University of Washington uses to track your progress to degree. If there are requirements missing from your degree audit, the University will not grant your degree.

So, if you have taken  STAT 311 to satisfy your statistics requirement, you need to make sure that STAT 311 is showing up when you refresh your DARS.  This is true of all degree requirements that appear on your DARS.

I purposefully chose STAT 311 to use as an example because STAT 311 is approved for statistics at the dept level only. DARS will not show STAT 311 unless you have communicated with one of your CEE advisers that you have taken STAT 311 and that it is not showing up on your DARS.

To run a fresh degree audit, use the MyPlan “Audit Degree (DARS)” option.  (We do not recommend using the MyPlan “Audit Plan” option as it misses some of the nuance in our degree programs)

Read about updates to courses, updates to Senior Year Faculty Mentoring sessions, important deadlines, mental health resources, and graduating info. As always, you know how to find us if you have questions or items to discuss!

Counseling/Mental Health Resources

During times of added stress, it is important to maintain proactive self-care (get plenty of sleep, stay hydrated, practice stress reliving techniques, etc.) and UW has many resources available to you.

If you have questions about any of the resources below, believe they might be of value to you, or you’d like a referral, please let us know.

  • UW Counseling Center

The UW Counseling Center has merged with Hall Health Mental Health units to provide mental health resources to the UW campus community. Please take a look at their website to see all of the resources available to you. They are also providing tips with how to deal with stress related to the COVID-19 outbreak and is offering their services remotely.

The Counseling Center is a free, confidential resource for students and offers professional services for stress management, coping strategies, and ways to manage conditions like anxiety and depression. You can make an appointment by calling 206-543-1240.

  • Husky Health and Well-Being

Husky Health and Well-Being offers a wide range of health and wellness services, from exceptional medical care and counseling services to recreation classes, safety resources, peer advocates, trainings and more. Their goal is to support health, safety, and well-being so you can make the most of your UW experience.

  • CareLink

CareLink is a free, confidential helpline for UW employees (mainly faculty and staff) that is staffed by licensed professionals who can talk with you about how to navigate difficult life situations and   help with stress management. They can also refer callers to one of their affiliated therapists for in-person counseling sessions. You can reach a representative 24/7 by calling 866-598-3978.

Graduating Seniors

If you are graduating in SPR21, your refreshed degree audit should show that “all requirements are met if in progress courses are completed.” If your audit is showing that you are missing requirements, please let us know asap. Please note that the CEE 498 courses in SPR21 will be applying as DIV after the 10th day of the quarter and if you are working on a “W by arrangement” to satisfy your writing requirement, the “W” will not show up until your grades are posted for the quarter. Some other items that you should be considering as you wrap up your degree:

FE Exam (BSCE/BSENVE Juniors and Seniors)

Your BSCE and BSENVE junior year 300-level curriculum is set up to prepare you to take the FE Exam, which in turn provides you with your Engineer in Training License (EIT).

The majority of CEE majors  will take the FE Exam  (Civil or Environmental) in the summer after the Junior year. Information can be found here.

    • Please note that the FE Exam schedule may be impacted by COVID19. It is our recommendation that you create an account and try to sign up to take the FE exam. If there are delays, you will be informed of them during the registration process.

Letters of Recommendation (BSCE/BSENVE Juniors and Seniors)

Whether you are applying to graduate school or for a full-time job after graduation, you will need letters of recommendation from CEE Faculty. We recommend choosing a few faculty members, either who you’ve taken classes with or who are in your area of focus, to reach out to. They are expecting to hear from you so do this sooner rather than later.  When you contact them, make sure you are providing them with enough information (who you are, your goals, next steps, etc.) that they can write you a personal letter.

Connecting with your CEE Advisers

Undergraduate advisors are available twice a week for drop-in advising (T & W 11am-12pm) as well as through advising appointments posted on our calendars here.

If you can’t find a time that works with your schedule, feel free to email ceadvice@uw.edu with your availability and we will do our best to find you a time. When you schedule an appointment with us, we will follow up with a zoom link.  If you have a “quick” question, you can also email them to ceadvice@uw.edu.
