The Public Works Seasonal Day Laborer positions opened in March 2022 and we are looking for two or three good candidates to work in our Operations and Maintenance divisions. The successful candidate will be performing technical work both in and outside the office. I have included a brief description of the various duties below. Most of our interns work five 8-hour shifts and start at 7:00am. Operations and Maintenance Engineering Intern/Day Laborer (2-3 Positions)The City of Everett is accepting applications for two seasonal Operations and Maintenance Engineering Intern/Day Laborer positions in Public Works. This employment is temporary and will not exceed 3- 6 months in duration. It is mandatory that the employee in this position contribute to the Washington State Public Employees Retirement System. This contribution is refundable upon the employees request at the completion of employment. This job classification is represented by Everett Municipal Employees Local 113, AFSCME. This position is not provided with City of Everett benefits.

NATURE OF WORK

Operations and Maintenance Engineering Day Laborers will perform basic duties including data collection, preparing documentation, and other various support functions for operations and maintenance for the City of Everett. An employee will perform a combination of indoor and outdoor tasks and will be assigned an Engineer and/or Engineering Technician who will provide training and professional direction.

EXAMPLES OF WORK

o   Maintenance and operations field investigation and measurements, for example, catch basin inspections or air valve inspections

o   Assist in reviewing/revising standard operating procedures.

o   Records/plans digitizing and filing of project files

o   Research property data in historical records.

o   Data entry and computations in spreadsheets and custom databases.

o   Investigate errors in existing data and initiate updates to GIS.

o   Assist in the development of the City’s Lead Service Line Inventory and other compliance efforts under the EPA’s Lead and Copper Rule Revisions.

o   Support the implementation of the City’s asset management program

SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS

  • Must successfully pass a pre-employment background check.
  • Possession of, or be able to obtain prior to appointment, a valid Washington State Driver’s License.
  • Prior to employment, must submit a motor vehicle driving record abstract.

REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES

  • Knowledge of general office practices and procedures and ability to communicate effectively orally and in writing.
  • Ability to understand and follow oral and written instructions and to apply guidelines to recurring operational and safety requirements.
  • Ability to proficiently operate computers and other office equipment and adapt to new equipment and software programs.
  • Ability to follow safety procedures, including the use of personal protective equipment, sturdy footwear, operating a City vehicle, working in and around vehicular traffic, and other safety measures directed by the City’s safety official.
  • Ability and willingness to be punctual and dependable, and to establish and maintain harmonious working relationships with supervisors, other employees and the general public.
  • Ability to follow City of Everett safety plans, including our COVID Safety Plan DOSH Directive 1.7, Cloth Face Covering and Surgical Masks, Physical Distancing, and Handwashing and Cleaning directives (copies of the directives can be provided upon request)

An employee will perform a combination of indoor and outdoor tasks and will be assigned a Traffic Engineer and Traffic Technician who will provide training and professional direction.

EXAMPLES OF WORK

o   Citywide turning movement counts and tube counts and compiling statistical data including traffic volume, vehicle classification, and vehicle speed.

o   Traffic operations field investigation and measurements for traffic engineering studies.

o   Records/plans digitizing and filing of updated traffic counts data, traffic signal timing and traffic plans.

o   Nighttime street sign reflectivity evaluation and development of sign purchase.

o   Crash data and traffic volume compilation for adjusting traffic signal timing.

o   Update GIS traffic data layers.

o   Development and construction inspection of City’s pavement marking contract, including development of inventory, measurements, and design elements for the 2022-2023 project.

o   Development and review of site specific traffic control plans for maintenance operations.

o   Data entry and computations in spreadsheets and custom databases.

SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS
