Valencia et al. paper on “Are fat and sugar just as detrimental in old age?”

Valencia et al. have recently published a review in the journal of Geroscience addressing the question “Are fat and sugar just as detrimental in old age?” They argue that that obesogenic, high-fat diets can exacerbate age-related disease and hallmarks of aging in young animals, but high-fat diets that are non-obesogenic may play a beneficial role in old age. Sugar consumption, on the other hand, do not need to cause obesity to induce mitochondrial dysfunction and inflammation, but there is a significant gap in experimental studies addressing the impact of sugar alone in the context of aging.
