The Q Center has been serving LGBTQ+ students, staff, and faculty for over 20 years at the University of Washington. We are located on the Seattle campus inside the Husky Union Building. We offer programming, resources, and support to meet the evolving social, emotional, and wellness needs of our community members. POSITION PURPOSE

The Q Center is seeking a Graduate Program & Policy Education Coordinator. This role is responsible for regularly disseminating updates on political developments relevant to LGBTQ+ students across the university. The Policy and Education Intern will track local, state, and federal policy proposals and changes, translating these updates into accessible formats for students, including through social media platforms. The Coordinator will play a crucial role in advancing the educational mission of the Q Center, focusing on empowering students with knowledge about their rights and upcoming legislation affecting LGBTQ+ communities. Additionally, the coordinator will share oversight of our Queer Mentorship and Peer Program (QMPP), will hold a seat on the Graduate Student Senate (GPSS), will oversee twice-monthly social programming specifically for graduate students, and will share responsibility with our Gayme Night event for LGBTQ+ gamers.

DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES

External Policy Analysis – 20%

  • Evaluate existing and emerging policies at local, state-wide, and national levels.
  • Distill policy trends into easily understandable information for student audiences.

Education and Training – 25%

  • Develop and implement educational initiatives to increase policy literacy among students, staff, and faculty.
  • Collaborate with Events Coordinator and Assistant Director of Operations to schedule and host educational workshops.
  • Create engaging content for social media and website to inform the community about local, state, and national policy developments.
  • Support initiatives that promote awareness and understanding of LGBTQ+ rights and issues on campus.
  • Receive coaching on effective educational strategies.
  • Assist in preparing educational presentations and campaigns related to policies affecting LGBTQ+ students.

Mentorship Program Management – 20%

  • Co-manage and oversee the Queer Mentorship and Peer Program (QMPP), ensuring its effectiveness and alignment with the Q Center’s mission.
  • Recruit, vet, pair, and orient queer and trans mentors, mentees, and peer mentors for the program.

GPSS Representation – 10%

  • Serve as a representative on the Graduate Student Senate (GPSS), advocating for LGBTQ+ student interests and concerns.

Social Programming – 10%

  • Organize and oversee twice-monthly social programming tailored specifically for graduate students within the LGBTQ+ community.

Gayme Night Collaboration – 10%

  • Collaborate with the team responsible for Gayme Night events, focusing on creating inclusive spaces and programming for LGBTQ+ gamers.

Community Engagement (5%)

  • Engage with community members and campus partners through email, phone, and in-person interactions.
  • Must engage in a minimum of 3 tabling opportunities throughout the year.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

  • Strong writing and editing skills.
  • Familiarity with the WA state and national legislative processes.
  • Familiarity with legalese and bill writing structures.
  • Strong time and project management abilities.
  • Ability to work effectively in teams under deadlines.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office and online meeting tools such as Zoom.

SUPERVISION

This position reports to the Q Center’s Assistant Director of Operations for task updates and the Q Center’s Program Manager for program updates. Professional development and coaching will be provided by the Q Center Director.

WORKING CONDITIONS

This role is work study eligible. This is a student position limited to a maximum of 19 hours per week, with occasional evening and weekend hours required. The specialist will work independently with oversight from supervisors to lead engagement and digital communications efforts. This position starts at $25/hr.
