Restoration Proposal for Sedge Sanctuary in UBNA

Union Bay Natural Area (UBNA) is the restored wildlife area of a former dumping site that was open from 1926 to 1966. Restoration on the site began in 1970, with the goal of practicing, promoting the research of, and teaching about ecological restoration. For this project SER-UW Plant Nursery, the SER-UW Student Organization, and volunteers worked together to restore a section of UBNA that was overrun with invasive weeds. Steps for this project included assessing the needs of the site, removing the invasive weeds, and planting native species. The Fall 2022 quarter focused on the planning steps, which is important in helping determine what species should be planted according to the site’s needs. Overall, the project will help us restore an essential part of the wetland that should be able to provide ecological benefits such as wildlife habitat, erosion control, run-off filtration, and more under the proper conditions.
