Sedum and (donʼt) Weep: Conquering Sedum Propagation

Sedum and (don’t) Weep: Conquering Sedum Propagation by Zara Ramerman (Spring 2023)

In the PNW and Puget Sound Lowlands, there are several native species that we do not currentlygrow at the SER-UW Native Plant Nursery, including Sedum spathulifolium, or Broadleaf stonecrop. This species is really interesting because succulents are not commonly considered for the area, and it grows very well in “poor” conditions such as in gravel and on rock faces. These factors make for a popular landscaping plant, especially in the yards of the greater Seattle area, but we donʼt have any to sell! Enter, “Sedum and (donʼt) Weep,” a guide for us as a nursery to propagate, grow, and sell this lovely PNW native. The goal is to create a guide for future horticulturists and to start us on our journey of being the leading Sedum suppliers for the UW community.
