If you’re a female undergraduate or graduate student and all too familiar with being in the minority, here is an opportunity to expand your network, develop professionally, find support, and help change this for the next generation! Read on to learn about a great outreach opportunity through the Society of Women Engineers:
Time to Invent is an outreach program run by graduate students and focused on kindling a love of science and engineering in young girls . Once a month, our mentors visit a local elementary school and lead 4th and 5th grade girls through hands-on activities to encourage an interest in innovation and science/engineering. While activities are typically led by the graduate mentors, both undergraduate and graduate mentors are encouraged to participate in the activities! Check out our website here
- Learn how to talk about your field or even your research to a very young audience
- Help develop creative activities that demonstrate scientific/engineering concepts in an exciting way
- Get to know UW female graduate/undergraduate students in other science/engineering field
- It’s immensely rewarding!!
This program is also the beginning of a graduate student-focused group within the UW section of Society of Women Engineers (SWE), a global organization supporting the success of women in STEM fields. SWE at UW has fantastic networking opportunities with employers and other professional women, leadership workshops, conference presentations, and more.
