Earth Day Volunteers Needed

Hi CEE community!

Join us next Tuesday, April 23rd from 11:00 – 1:30 in celebrating Earth Day at the Ethnic Cultural Center! The CEE department will have a table at the 2024 UW Earth Day Fair where CEE students will have the opportunity to share with the public and the UW community the research and other activities our department engages in to find ways to help the planet. Plus, it’s a great time to learn something from other departments and on-campus groups.

If you are interested in participating, please add your name to the signup sheet:

https://bit.ly/CEE24EarthDay

At least two volunteers per time slot are needed, but if both slots are taken when you are available, feel free to stop by anyway! If you are interested in assisting with preparations for the fair, but cannot actually attend, add your name and email below the time slots so I can reach out to you.

This is a great opportunity to show off the hard work students, researchers, and professors are doing in the environmental field. No prior knowledge of ongoing research efforts is necessary, but if you have personal experience to share, we’d love if you signed up! Civil or Environmental majors of all class levels are encouraged to get involved.

Volunteer Opportunity

Hello everyone,

My name is Shaheer and I am a current UW final year undergrad student who is one of the cofounders of Job Hunt Simplified, a brand new project that aims to create free entry level resumes, cover letters, and apply for jobs on behalf of individuals who are experiencing homelessness and/or difficult situations.

We are looking for around 5-10 volunteers from UW who can perform any one or more of the tasks below:

  1. Creating Entry Level Cover Letters
  2. Creating Entry Level Resumes
  3. Applying for Entry Level Job Positions on various job platforms

This could be a great volunteer experience for resumes, CVs, applications, and would definitely be a very rewarding and beneficial experience to hopefully help people who are struggling with homelessness.

Additionally, the commitment is flexible in terms of how many hours you would be willing to put in, and can be done from the comfort of your home or anywhere else!

Please feel free to apply at https://upwardjourneys.org/volunteers/ and you can also email me at sarif@uw.edu if you have any questions or suggestions.

CEE Career Fair Host (for Freshmen Engineering Students)

This is something new we would like to try this year in an effort to recruit more Freshmen to our department.  We will host a table (titled: 1st year Engineering Undergrad – Career Fair Help) where 1st year engineering students (who have not yet picked their major) can come and get one of our own students to take them around to a company or booth of their choice and introduce them to one of the recruiters there. The hope is that the 1st year student will get to talk to someone in the civil/environmental engineering industry and get a feel for what they do it and why they love it.  But, we need YOU to be at the table, greet the students as they come in, and escort them to a company of interest. You will also give them a note card that they will fill out with basic information about the person they met and, if they return it to the table, they get a $5 Starbucks gift card.  I am looking for about 3-4 volunteers for each of two shifts.

Student Opportunities: Protect Birds on Campus!

Hello!

My name is Anya Gavrylko, and I am a research assistant for the Bird Friendly UW project, a CSF funded effort to reduce bird collisions on campus. The project is based around UW’s campus and monitors bird collisions with buildings in order to support our long term goal of finding design based solutions and identifying which species in our area are most vulnerable to collisions.

To carry out this research our project needs student volunteers to walk collision monitoring routes for one hour-long shift a week. Volunteering with us is a great way for students to practice bird identification and engage with urban wildlife, while also gaining experience in a research setting. We need volunteers for this summer and the fall!

In Autumn Quarter 2023 we will also be offering a class, ARCH 499: Conservation Design – Preventing Bird Building Collisions for students interested in learning more about preventing bird collisions, sustainable architecture, and urban conservation efforts. By taking this class students can get credit for walking routes and enhance their overall learning! Continue reading

BEYOND ENGINEERING – Event Invitation for Wednesday, May 24th at 5:00 p.m.

This is an invitation to come to a departmental event where we are hosting a group of freshmen (undecided) engineering students. I would like people from our own department to attend because the purpose of the event is for these freshmen to interact with students actually in the department – to find out what it’s like and ask questions. This event will feature three of our own: Mo Malakoutian (CEE 220 GOAT instructor), Kim Tsai (BSCE 2016), and Jorge Riancho (BSCE 2023). They will talk about things you can do with a civil engineering degree that are NOT civil engineering.

What: Beyond Engineering – Use your engineering degree to do whatever you want!

When: Wednesday, May 24th, 2023 5:00 – 6:00 p.m.

Where: Maple Hall Great Room

Food: Free Pizza!

Bonus: Introducing Engineering Rome 2024
