Position Description:
Seattle Public Utilities (SPU) is seeking an undergraduate engineering intern for the Materials Laboratory in the Construction Management Division of the Project Delivery & Engineer Branch. The Materials Laboratory is responsible for quality assurance of construction materials for capital projects undertaken by many City departments. The intern will learn various standards, methods and techniques for sampling and testing of construction materials. Further, the intern will be coached in methods of analysis, construction technique, laboratory quality control and quality assurance principles. This intern will report to the Materials Engineering supervisor.
Pay: $20.07 – $22.59 Hourly

Learning Objectives:
- Learn and apply commonly used sampling and testing standards from the American Association of State Highway and Transportation Officials (AASHTO), American Society of Testing and Materials (ASTM), and Washington State Department of Transportation (WSDOT)
- Learn and apply standard specifications for construction used by the City of Seattle and WSDOT, especially as they pertain to construction materials
- Learn the operation, calibration and maintenance of apparatus used in the testing of construction materials
- Become familiar with the culture, modes of communication, chain of command and protocols of working with contractors, skilled trades, resident engineers, designers and project managers in a construction environment
- Learn and apply methods of laboratory quality control
- Learn and apply methods of quality assurance pertaining to construction materials
- Observe and learn common means and methods used in construction processes
