The Opportunity: The Washington State Department of Transportation (WSDOT) Office of Urban Mobility, Access and Megaprograms (UMAM) has one internship position available in the Toll Division. The position is open until filled, will start in late June 2024 and end in August. We are looking for an energetic student who is interested in the field of Transportation Engineering.
The selected candidate will have the opportunity to shadow professionals in different disciplines, develop familiarity with toll systems engineering, learn about Intelligent Transportation System (ITS) operations, analyze big data, apply data science skills, produce system and financial reporting, and participate in field work/inspections. WSDOT offers flexible hours and the opportunity to build a professional network with other agencies and engineering companies. We currently operate on a hybrid work schedule, meaning we work from home as well as work in the office. Ability to travel to our CSC location in Renton may be required occasionally.
Responsibilities:
- Assist the Toll Lane System Operations Team with daily monitoring of WSDOT toll facilities including Tacoma Narrows Bridge, SR 520 Bridge, SR 167 High Occupancy Toll (HOT) Lanes, I-405 Express Toll Lanes (ETL), and the SR 99.
- Complete daily reporting of toll data, and assist with toll data requests, as well as ad-hoc data reporting and analysis.
- Assist with evaluation and operation of Toll Information Technology Systems and other transportation ITS infrastructure. Develop test plans, collect data, and analyze results as needed.
- Monitoring daily activities in the new Back Office System (BOS), help identify trends and analyze results within the system.
- Other projects as assigned, including summer field work on the I-405 Express Toll Lanes.
Minimum Qualifications:
- UW Civil Engineering Major Undergraduate
- Must be enrolled as a student during internship.
- Available for full time work during the summer
- Strong computer and typing skills
- Valid driver’s license and ability to operate a motor vehicle
- At least one year of driving experience
Desired Qualifications
- Interest in Transportation Engineering
- Familiarity with Microsoft Excel
- Knowledge of Data Analysis
- Experience in Programming
