Engineering and Drainage Intern
- SWM provides a wide variety of public programs and services to preserve and improve the health of Snohomish County’s water resources and natural systems and to reduce road and property flooding. Interns gain hands-on experience under the direction of engineering and/or drainage professionals.
- As an Engineering & Drainage Intern you will:
- Review maps and special data using ArcGIS
- Review site plans and research easement and covenant data
- Assist in fieldwork to collect drainage data
- Assist with other administrative duties including scanning documents, populating spreadsheets, and cataloging information.
- The preferred candidates will be:
- Familiar with construction techniques
- Familiar with various types of stormwater facilities
- Familiar with construction drawings
- Experienced in ArcGIS
Design, Construction, Survey, or Materials Engineering Intern
- Engineering services provides design, construction, and materials acceptance and testing for a wide variety of public works projects including road, bridge, drainage, and building projects to maintain and improve transportation and other infrastructure for the citizens of Snohomish County.
- The following internships are available in Engineering Services:
- Construction Interns: Interns will assist in the oversight of Public Works construction projects. Interns can expect to: assist engineer and inspectors in oversight contractor work, do field measurement of contractor work for payment, create documentation for contractor payment, observe and record contractor work for compliance, and assist county staff with daily work. Interns will be primarily working outside in varying weather conditions.
- Design Interns: Interns will assist with the design and construction of roads, bridges and other public works projects. Interns can expect to assist engineers in the preparation and review of engineering calculations, technical data and reports, cost estimates and plan production through the use of AutoCAD and Civil3D. Design interns may coordinate with all work groups (construction, geotechnical, survey, right-of-way, environmental).
- Geotech / Materials Lab Interns: Intern should expect to: assist Geotechnical Engineers in geotechnical analysis; collection of subsurface soil data; assist with field investigations; catalog historical data; assist the materials lab lead with field testing of materials; administer lab tests; and collect material samples from offsite sources.
- Survey Interns: Interns should expect to aid in survey related research including deeds, records of survey, plats and County road surveys. Research will be conducted electronically and in the County’s records center. Prepare historic survey documents for archival. Assist with field crews gathering topographic information for the design of road improvements, drainage improvements, and improvements to County facilities.
- The preferred candidate will be:
- Enrolled in a civil engineering program
- Familiar with computer programs
- Familiar with construction drawings and specifications
- SWM provides a wide variety of public programs and services to preserve and improve the health of Snohomish County’s water resources and natural systems and to reduce road and property flooding.
- As a Floodplain Services intern, you will:
- Review maps and special data using ArcGIS.
- Review site plans and research easement and covenant data.
- Assist in fieldwork to collect river and stream data.
- Assist in fieldwork to monitor county flood control structures.
- Assist entering field data into a county database.
- Assist with other administrative duties including scanning documents, populating spreadsheets, and cataloging information.
- As a Lakes Water Quality intern, you will:
- Assist with lake water quality monitoring.
- Learn to use and calibrate water quality sampling equipment.
- Manage data including data entry and quality control and assurance.
- Conduct aquatic plant surveys.
- Assist with invasive plant removal.
- Assist with toxic algae monitoring and notification.
- Assist with the LakeWise residential outreach program including organizing workshops and outreach events, developing outreach materials, and communicating with lake area residents.
- The preferred candidate will be:
- Knowledgeable of common pollutants and sources of pollutants in lakes.
- Knowledgeable of public outreach or environmental communication.
- Familiar with limnology
- Experience collecting water quality data
- As a Native Plant Program Intern, you will:
- Collect data on vegetation including survival, vigor, and cover.
- Collect data on riparian and floodplain forest structure and understory vegetation.
- Assist with invasive knotweed assessments, treatments, or treatment responses.
- Manage and analyze vegetation monitoring data.
- Assist with restoration of lake and marine shorelines.
- Inventory locations with or requiring stream-related signs.
- The preferred candidate will be:
- Knowledgeable of Washington native plants, especially Puget Sound lowlands
- Knowledgeable of invasive species and noxious weeds
- Experienced in ArcGIS
- Each internship will take place in Everett, WA. Salary ranges from $17.00 – $18.00 hourly
