On September 6th, UW Libraries along with UW grad student and artist Han Eckelberg, President Cauce, Libraries Dean Simon Neame and many other campus and community partners celebrated the permanent installation of this iconic art piece and its official home in Odegaard Library. While autumn quarter is still a few weeks away, UW Libraries is busier than ever with many new events, exhibits, and resources (did somebody say New York Times??!!).  We kicked-off September with a special celebration of the permanent installation of the artwork  Bruce Lee Ascending in Odegaard Library; a great way to usher in the start of a new academic year. Whether this is your first year, or your twenty-first year, there is something new to discover. Be sure to check the Libraries Student Welcome and UW Libraries Faculty Guide for many helpful tips and new information that will help you prepare for the year ahead! 

Operations

  • Autumn hours are now posted, some branch libraries will increase hours 
  • Suzzallo Library will be closed September 16th and until noon on the 19th.

What’s New in 2022

 

The New York Times digital edition is now available for all current UW and Cascadia College students, staff and faculty via the UW Libraries university-wide subscription!!  Visit our New York Times page to learn more about creating or switching your account.

 

For New Faculty: Jumpstart Research@UW September 12th in person! In partnership with the Office of Research, this new workshop will introduce new faculty to the UW research ecosystem.

 

 

Personal Pods in Odegaard Library looking for a quiet place to do an online class or call but can’t find a room?  Odegaard’s new personal pods (first come, first serve) are here for you.

 

 

 

 

 

 

Li Lu Library Opens! The Li Lu Library, part of the new Health Science Education Building (HSEB), opened on September 6th!  Located on the 3rd floor of the HSEB, the library provides a variety of tech-enabled collaboration and study spaces with library staff available 10am-2pm Monday-Friday. A Husky card is required for access.   (See “Events” below for information on the grand opening event for all UW Health Sciences students and faculty).   

New Exhibits: 

Invisible Cities: The Prints of Giovanni Battista Piranesi and the Art of the Built Environment. See a selection of the library’s extensive collection of Piranesi prints accompanied by archival drawings and current student and faculty work in the College of Built Environments, through Saturday, March 18, 2023.

 

 

 

 

Fifties AmericaFifties America: Through this month only! Explore 1955 through this detailed display and online guide of photos, news, and other historical documents illuminating a pivotal year in American history. Allen Library North Lobby, Monday, Aug 1 – Friday, Sep 23, 2022.

 

New Resources:

  • Li Lu Library Grand Opening for Health Sciences Students and Faculty September 28: The University of Washington Health Sciences Library invites the UW community to celebrate, explore, and learn about the services and spaces at the new Li Lu Library. Please join us on the 3rd floor of the new Health Science Education Building, located at 1607 NE Pacific Street, Seattle, WA for an “open house” event with treats, giveaways, and a first-hand opportunity to learn about the technology and collaboration spaces available in this amazing new library for interprofessional health sciences education.   • Dawg Daze: From “just for fun” trivia events, to Library tours and first-generation student orientations and more, UW Libraries’ Dawg Daze events (September 21-30) are a great way to meet other students and to learn about all the ways the Libraries can help you succeed! Jumpstart Research @UW, September 12th– The UW Office of Research and the Libraries are offering a new workshop, Jumpstart Research@UW, to introduce new faculty to the UW research ecosystem. This event will be hosted on Sept. 12 at the HUB from 1 to 5 p.m. 

Pressbooks: Pressbooks’ suite of products– offered through #YourUWLibrary– makes it easy to create, adapt, and share educational material. Learn how to create open textbooks, course materials and more. There are typically Pressbooks workshops every month. September’s events:

Drop-In Help 

  • Digital Scholarship Drop-In Help Hours (via Zoom) on Thursdays:  We offer consultations for research and course-related projects. Examples include support for digital publishing, building digital exhibits, and more! We can help you find the right tools, resources and instruction whether you’re just getting started or are working on an ongoing project.
