Spring: Foraging , Gardening, and the Great Outdoors

Among other things, learn about guerilla gardening, medicinal wild plants, foraging in the Pacific Northwest, and about the birds in Washington State. We’ve got children’s titles as well for our younger Huskies. Check these books out, in the SNO Lobby.

New Books are in Bloom

Also in the SNO Lobby are new books purchased for the UW Tacoma Library, along with beautifully handcrafted flowers. From books on climate change to black holes, from Kazakh prose and poetry to decolonization and pedagogies of liberation, stop by and find something that suits your curiosity.

Children’s Books about Springtime and Rain

Cartoon of a Husky under an umbrella. Text reads Pitter patter pitter patter listen to the spring rain

Our youngest Husky patrons are always welcome! We have titles that focus on springtime rain — and mud — and the growth of beautiful flowers — and so much more. Pop on by TLB1, and you can also stop by our caregiver-child study carrel!

Teen Literature Day

Picture with the text "Support teen literature day! April 11th, 2024" framed by green laurel-style leaves, and flowers sprouting out of a book, with a pink background

Every year, the Young Adult Library Services Association (YALSA) celebrates Support Teen Literature Day on Thursday of National Library Week (April 7th – 13th, 2024). We’ve compiled a collection of books featured in the last five years of YALSA’s Teens’ Top Ten Lists, in which teen book groups around the country vote on their favorite young adult books of the previous year. Celebrate the magic of young adult literature and accessibility for all teen readers, pick up your favorite YA book. You can even join us in our weekly social justice themed YA book club, Real Lit! Head on over to TLB1 for a selection of some of today’s hottest titles.

New Body Positivity Titles

Graphic with the words "New Body Positivity Titles". Woman in hijab sits on a chair to the right of the text and is gesturing to the text. Small stars, flowers, dots and a plant add texture to the image.

To better reflect the joyous diversity of our community, we’ve recently identified and acquired some new young adult titles that promote body positivity! These range from fantasy to contemporary, realist fiction and all feature body positive protagonists. Be sure to stop by TLB1 to view our newest display and check out any that catch your eye!

Bibliotherapy

A rainbow made of streamers, white ballons as clouds on a concrete wall. Books are on a bookshelf.

What is bibliotherapy? Bibliotherapy is a therapeutic approach that uses literature to support mental health, often used along with a therapist. (And yes, we’ve got a full on rainbow up on our wall, and it is gorgeous!)

  • Prescriptive bibliotherapy, or self-help, involves the use of specific reading materials to address a variety of mental health concerns.
  • Books on Prescription is a program where reading materials targeting specific mental health needs are “prescribed” by mental health professionals.
  • Creative bibliotherapy utilizes imaginative literature—novels, short stories, poetry, plays, and biographies—to improve psychological well-being.

Head on up to TLB2 to spend some time with our wheel of emotions, take a selfie (“shelfie”!), and learn about Sadie Peterson Delaney, a pioneer in bibliotherapy.
