Dear Wellness Community,
Happy Valentine’s Day! Given the timing of this issue, I can’t resist leaning into this (cheesy) holiday just a little. Though capitalism has had its way with the day in recent centuries, its history dates back to long before that would have been true—year AD496. Since then, it’s spread worldwide and been variously associated with lovebirds and their mating season, a mystical figure who leaves unpredictable gifts (not all good ones), the coming of spring, beekeepers, and of course, romantic love.
I like the broadest definition myself, which is that it’s a celebration of love and affection in our lives. Try a craft with your kiddos. Call your family and tell them you love them! Pick a night with friends to have a cake tasting (Trophy, Deru and Deep Sea are some of my favorite spots). Grab a date and plan a fancy meal. And strengthen any relationship in your life with this good advice!
February is Black History Month. Choose a loving way to engage with your relationship to this part of our past and present that draws on your strengths and identity. If you have Black ancestry, perhaps allowing yourself a little more tenderness? Yoga by Biola offers an inclusive space for movement.
Thank a Resident Day is Friday, February 24th! A deep bow of gratitude to all of you, who provide such meaningful service to our community, and to the loved ones who support you through it! It’s hard for anyone outside of medicine to understand your intense commitment to this work, but it’s really amazing to witness. Thank you!
