Wellness Corner – July 20th, 2021

Dear Wellness Community,

Welcome!! A new year has begun for us in the GME community. We are so happy to welcome our new trainees and families to the Seattle area and to UW GME. Take time to begin this year with starting new adventures, making connections, getting acquainted with all the sights around. As you get settled in, we want to share some of what Seattle has to offer.

Summer is here with a bang! What a couple of weeks it has been here with the unusually warm, sweltering summer. Not typical Seattle weather. As the school year ended for young people, the season for outdoor fun has begun.

July is the start of summer BBQ’s in the parks, outdoor concerts, fairs, farmer’s markets, picnics, getting together with friends and family. The mask mandates are lifted in our state and things are opening up slowly. In this issue, we share outdoor fun (movies, farm tours, farmers markets) as well as ideas for staying cool indoors.

We have a boating event planned for you and the GME Life After Residency Seminar is on the books! More information and registration info below!

What’s Cookin?!

It’s the best time of the year to enjoy cool treats. Here’s a favorite with my own spin on it. It’s called Watergate Salad or Ambrosia. Find the easy recipe here. I love this recipe during the hot summer days. It is refreshing, cool and light recipe. Marshmallows are optional (I don’t use them) but I do add nuts (chopped walnuts and almonds if you are not allergic).

Prep now and enjoy later! Lani Wall’s White Bean Salad is best after a day or two for the flavors to come together, so if you have time one day, you can still enjoy this simple recipe when you’re too busy to cook later in the week. Find the recipe here, thanks Lani!

Wellness Corner – June 15th, 2021

Dear Wellness Community,

Happy Pride Month to all the LGBTQ folks and Allys! I hope you’re already sporting your colors on Fridays along with the rest of the UW community, but it’s not too late to get in on the fun. A few more ideas on how to celebrate are in this month’s issue.

We’ve also recently seen the anniversary of George Floyd’s murder pass and Juneteenth is around the corner. Setting aside some time to reflect on this short and long year may be in order, so make space in your calendars for emotional care and introspection. I bet you set some goals for your personal growth and/or healing around this time last year–are you on course? If not compassionately re-steer yourself towards your true north.

June is also a time when the light is long and you may need a little less sleep or find yourself eating dinner later than normal. It’s okay for your body’s rhythm to change with the season! Enjoy the energy and mood boost if it’s there and don’t miss celebrating the solstice Sunday June 20th, when we’ll have our longest day. Solstice and the start of summer will share the day with the Dads in our community–Happy early Father’s Day to you!

We will be saying goodbye to some folks who are on to the next chapter and welcoming new people to our pod– Wishing all of you well as you move through change and transition! (And if you had a good experience with the Wellness Service, don’t forget to give us some props by using the Wellness Testimonial button below–it helps us continue to expand our offerings!)

Happy Pride Month!

  • It’s worth watching the short 7minute documentary (at bottom of page) explaining how this beautiful book of photographs of couples in love came together even if you’re not going to buy it, but it would surely be a gorgeous addition to your coffee table collection.
  • A free offering from the Library for you and your little one. Tune in for Rainbow Story Time at 10 am Wednesdays!
  • I was sort of hoping that the Pride Parade would be back in full force this year, but the virtual offerings scheduled for June 26th and 27th still look great–I love Perfume Genius so make sure not to miss that performance on the virtual main stage Saturday, June 26th at 3pm!
  • One of the ways UW is marking Pride Month is to encourage sporting your Pride colors every Friday in the month of June. If you need some accessories, Target has you covered. or you can check out REI’s new line!

Art from Our GME Community

Feel free to share your own artistic creation (writing, painting, poetry) for future issues. Enjoy this lovely poem by Michelle Chee, (rising) PGY 2 in Neurology:

Friends are the people whose heartbeats rhyme

Whose footsteps fit together like a jigsaw

Whose smiles blur together at the edges

Their dreams seep through one another

Their heartbreaks are patched with the same cloth

Their souls are dyed in complementary hues

They are trees under the same sky

They are candles at the same altar

They are notes in the same song

Friends are the people whose histories harmonize

Michelle says: “I moved to Seattle without knowing many people in the area, and because of the pandemic, I haven’t been able to see most of my close friends in person for the past year.  Recently two of my friends from medical school were able to visit me.  Spending time with them was such a relief and really gave me the sense of familiarity that I’ve been missing.  The people I’ve met here are great, but there’s nothing like old friends.

Black Lives Matter

  • If you’re unsure about the history of the Tulsa Race Massacre, this podcast episode is for you- it covers how this horrible event unfolded and how institutional racism infused it’s every turn. This year is the 100th anniversary of this event and the community that was brutalized never fully regrew.
  • This month-long virtual festival will unfold across multiple dimensions at the intersection of Science, Race, Afro-Futurism, Imagination, Speculation, Sci-Fi, Social Sciences, and Philosophy. As you roam through the “halls” of this virtual world, you’ll discover information, performance, ritual and more!
  • This article has some well crafted graphics that show how disadvantaged black boys and men, in particular, are when it comes to economic mobility.
  • Paris is Burning is a tight documentary about the Balls in NYC in the 80’s where black genderqueer folks found a safe space to be themselves. You’ll notice the precursors to many of our dance moves and linguistic shorthand popping up. In other words this doc is fierce.

Mindfulness Minute

  • What do we really know about Mindfulness? This article breaks down the proven benefits and the ones that are less sure. According to this research, it can help reduce bias, increase compassion and attention, and improve stress and relationship health among other benefits. Which have you experienced?
  • I really enjoyed this meditation by Lama Rod Owens and it’s nice to revisit the recording a year later and appreciate his focus on holding the pain of racial injustice.

Wellness Corner – May 18th, 2021

Dear Wellness Community,

As we near the end of this academic year and pause to reflect on it, we may be filled with a myriad of feelings. What a year it has been! This year has brought with it many experiences- we learned new ideas, skills and we missed many important events, experiences and faced lossesMost of us are vaccinated and there is some semblance and hope of normalcy. We wake up to blue skies, longer and slightly warmer days and some beautiful vistas around us.

May is Mental Health awareness month. Wellness has been the focus more this year than ever before. Let us take some time to care for ourselves in the midst of loss, change and new hope. May is also Asian Pacific Islander heritage month. We stand in solidarity with our AAPI community in the face of hateful rhetoric, and racist acts over the last several months. May is National Nurses Month. We recognize the vital contributions nurses make daily and their impact on the health of our community. Thank you Nurses!

This month’s WC has a bit of everything: from picking your own fruit and crops, starting a garden to enjoying food in Seattle’s International District in support of AAPI community, a bike challenge for fitness lovers among us to partaking in cultural events in the area. May this new beginning rejuvenate us all. For Star War fans, May the force be with you!

Tiffany took this picture of Cherry blossoms at right in her neighborhood, and would like to invite the GME community to share in her love of poetry. “I tend to find homemade chicken burgers dry but this recipe includes a secret ingredient – a little Dijon mayo in the patty! The burgers are flavorful and the included salad rounds out the meal nicely. Great for a weekend grill or a quick weeknight dinner! Patties also keep well as leftovers. “

Wellness Corner – March 16th

Dear Wellness Community,

What a year it has been! Last year at this time, we came face to face with a pandemic of huge proportions.

It has been one long year. UW, our staff, physicians, residents and fellows worked hard to care for patients, family and each other. There is light at the end of the tunnelUniversity of Washington provided the 100,000th dose of Covid vaccine at the end of Feb and the work goes on. The brighter, longer and at times warmer days can help with getting moving, finding outdoor activities like hiking, farm trips with the kids, enjoying the blossoms around us, and even growing our own gardens.

In this month’s Wellness Corner, you can find some fun ideas on urban hikes, parks, tulip, daffodil and cherry blossom watching.

March is National Nutrition MonthParticipate in a challenge, join an online nutrition community with the Whole U or try a new recipe. In our new What’s cookin section, try making a tested recipe recommended by our own Lani Wall, GME Staff.

Our BLM section has recommendations on books and films that talk about racism. We also share some Black landmarks around the city that you can add to your list of outdoor activities

Spring to me is a new beginning and a new seasonof trying out new ideas, getting out of the cold sometimes dark winter into crisper sunny days to take walks and explore new trails, new ways of looking at things around us and even ourselves. I hope to steal a few moments from my day to take in the beauty around: the chirping, the new buds on the rhodies, even the noisy lawn mowers that all signal spring.

What is one new thing you may try this season?
