CVC Placement Training Policy
1. Scope
Residents and fellows in University of Washington (UW) graduate medical education (GME) training programs accredited by the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education (ACGME); residents in programs accredited by the Commission on Dental Accreditation (CODA); fellows in non-ACGME clinical fellowships with the title of Fellow Non-ACGME; and visiting residents and fellows who have responsibilities for Central Venous Catheter (CVC) placement. Residents, Fellows, and Fellow Non-ACGME are hereafter referred to as “Residents”.
2. Purpose
To ensure standard practice of central line insertion at UW Medicine clinical sites to optimize patient safety and patient care outcomes.
3. Policy
Central Venous Catheter (CVC) training and approval is required for UW Medicine providers who will supervise or place central lines. This includes the following:
- Medical staff who plan to supervise placement of CVCs under non-emergent circumstances must apply for Special Privileges unless exempt as outlined in UW Medicine policy Vascular Access Management in Adult Patients: Central Venous Catheters (CVC) and Arterial Catheters.
- Any resident who will place central lines under direct or indirect supervision by an attending.
Under emergent circumstances where central venous access is required as an immediate, life- saving measure, the most qualified member of the healthcare team should carry out CVC placement.
A. Applicable Programs
Programs with residents who will place central lines are responsible for informing UW GME Learning Gateway during the annual eLearning opt-in period if their residents are required to complete the CVC privileging process and need to be registered for training.
B. Program Supervision Policies
CVC placement must be included in the list of clinical activities/procedures in the program’s Supervision Policy. The number of required procedures may vary by program.
C. Required CVC Training
- CVC eLearning Module: Completion of the Central Venous Catheter eLearning module in the UW Medicine Learning Hub as part of the June eLearning launch.
- CVC Simulation Training at WISH: In-person, simulation-based venous access placement through the WWAMI Institute for Simulation in Healthcare (WISH) and satisfactory (100%) completion of all elements of the checklist.
- Training Compliance: Program directors and administrators will be responsible for monitoring completion of training prior to scheduling simulation training.
- Registration: Scheduling of simulation training is the responsibility of the program. To schedule a session at WISH, contact wishuwmc@uw.edu (for UWMC) or wishhmc@uw.edu for HMC.
- Verification of Completion of Training: At the completion of simulation training, proctors and residents must both initial the training form and return the form to a member of the WISH staff. WISH staff will verify/enter completed forms into UW Medicine Learning Hub.
- Visiting Residents: Visiting Residents from Madigan Army Medical Center fulfill this requirement via completion of the CVC e-Modules for Madigan Army Medical Center Residents.
4. Compliance Monitoring
A. Training
Compliance with these requirements will be monitored by the training program as follows:
- Documented completion of the Central Venous Catheter eLearning Module in the UW Medicine Learning Hub.
- Documented completion of simulation training at WISH in the UW Medicine Learning Hub
- Documentation of supervised procedures entered in the Procedures Certifications module in MedHub by the program director and viewable to hospital staff.
B. Patient Safety
The quality and safety of a resident’s clinical experience must be to the satisfaction of the Program Director. If concerns arise, the Program Director has the ability to request that an individual complete additional training or proctoring.
5. Refresher Training
There are no requirements for refresher training, however trainees and their supervisors are encouraged to review the CVC e-Modules on the WISH website as “just in time” training prior to CVC placement:
- Full CVC Training Module (includes CVC placement video and additional slides)
- CVC Placement Technique video (video only)
