Mitochondria are power house of the cell and as such are essential for life. Moreover, emerging research has established that mitochondria are not simply static, passively producing energy, but that they are key sensors and responders to changing cellular environments. Increasingly, abnormal metabolism and mitochondrial dysfunction are recognized as therapeutic targets for a wide variety of diseases, e.g. obesity and diabetes, cardiovascular diseases, cancer, Alzheimer, and Parkinson’s disease etc. Research at the Mitochondria and Metabolism Center (MMC) seeks to make scientific discoveries, develop novel technologies, and ultimately translate lab findings into the next generation of diagnostics and therapy.
