PGY1/2 Health System Pharmacy Administration and Leadership

Program Description

The primary practice sites for the UW Medicine combined PGY1/PGY2 Health System Pharmacy Administration and Leadership Residency program are the University of Washington Medical Center (UWMC) Northwest and Montlake Campuses, and Harborview Medical CenterThe program provides the administrative residents or informatics residents 52 weeks of training in the PGY1 program and 52 weeks of training in health system leadership practice: clinical and operational management, patient safety and process improvement, management of financial resources, human resources management, and advanced leadership development. The program offers flexibility, allowing the residency to be tailored to the individual’s specific needs.  The aim of the program is to prepare residents who can assume high level managerial, supervisory, and leadership responsibilities. Concurrent with rotations, the resident will be enrolled in the Master of Business Administration (MBA)* Program or the Master of Health Informatics and Health Information Management (MHIHIM) Program through the University of Washington (UW).  

 *Current residents completing the administrative residency in 2025 or 2026 will continue their enrollment in the UW Master of Health Administration (MHA).

Program Details

The resident will spend the first 12 months developing a firm clinical foundation by completing clinical rotations in a variety of settings.  The resident will begin to gain exposure to pharmacy operations and Department of Pharmacy Services administration through completion of projects and involvement with pharmacy leaders.  Upon completion, the resident may earn a PGY1 certificate.
