PGY2 Investigational Drugs and Research

Program Description

The PGY2 Investigational Drugs and Research Residency Program is an ASHP candidate residency at UW Medicine. This program provides twelve months of training designed to develop and refine expert skills necessary in the pharmacist’s provision of care for patients enrolled in clinical trials. The primary practice sites include Fred Hutchinson Cancer Center (FHCC) and University of Washington Medical Center Montlake Campus (UWMC-ML). The Investigational Drug Services Pharmacy department currently manages over 350 clinical trials, providing residents with opportunities in a wide variety of research areas including Oncology, non-Oncology, COVID-19, Industry-sponsored, Investigator-initiated and NCI funded Phase I-III clinical trials. Residents work independently as an integral member of the healthcare team under the supervision of preceptors with extensive experience in their respective practice areas. The aim of this program is to provide the specific skills and competencies to the resident that are needed to assume advanced practitioner and leadership roles in Pharmacy Research practice. After completion of the program, the resident will be proficient in the regulatory requirements for clinical research, providing advanced and specialized care for research participants, and managing the pharmacy operations in the evolving field of clinical research.
