Who We Are

​The University of Washington School of Medicine Graduate Medical Education Office is responsible for the administrative oversight and academic quality of the UW School of Medicine’s 125 Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education (ACGME)-accredited residency and clinical fellowship programs, the UW School of Dentistry’s 4 Commission on Dental Accreditation (CODA)-accredited dental programs, and 80+ non-ACGME accredited fellowships.

Our UW GME programs are designed to train skillful physicians and ingrain habits of life-long learning and well-formed ethical and professional modes of practice.  We work closely with our residency and fellowship program directors and administrators, clinical departments, and hospital and school administration to enhance the quality of the learning environment for our trainees, ensure the safety of our patients, and support innovation in educational methods and clinical care.  Our ability to provide this support is outlined in the UWSOM Statement of Commitment to Graduate Medical Education.

The mission of UW GME is to improve the health of the public by fostering the professional growth of physician-leaders within a supportive and dynamic culture of learning, building the foundation for a workforce that represents and enhances the communities we serve.

Training Sites

Among over 800 sponsoring institutions nationally, UW Medicine ranks 6th in the number of ACGME-accredited programs and 8th in the number of trainees. Trainees are located at five primary teaching sites in Seattle: University of Washington Medical Center-Montlake, Harborview Medical Center, Seattle Children’s Hospital, the VA Puget Sound Health Care System and University of Washington Medical Center-Northwest. Over 300 additional community hospitals and clinics in Seattle and the greater WWAMI region also serve as important training sites for UW residents and fellows.
