Description: An advocacy elective is an opportunity for residents to pursue dedicated time focused on the broader context of child health. This rotation allows residents to tailor their experience based on individual interests and goals. Through working on an advocacy project, residents gain knowledge, skills and expertise in effective advocacy for children. Residents have the chance to use their influence as pediatricians to promote the well-being of children outside of the hospital/clinic– and to build this as a foundation in their careers.
This elective allows you to work on a specific advocacy project of your choosing with the support of a project mentor that you identify. If a resident needs assistance identifying a potential project and/or mentor, our faculty director is available to assist you. Elective options include working on a local advocacy project at your continuity clinic, with a community agency partner, or on an environmental health issue. Residents interested in policy-related projects and/or legislative advocacy can partner with the Washington Chapter of the American Academy of Pediatrics (WCAAP), or participate in a national AAP Advocacy internship in Washington DC or at the AAP headquarters outside Chicago. The AAP internship programs require an application and must be done at least 90 days prior to the start of the elective.
