Overview
You MUST make changes to your current Drug Enforcement Agency (DEA) registration BEFORE you start a new job or a move to a NON-UW fellowship or residency program.

Current Registration
Your current DEA registration is FEE EXEMPT due to your status as a trainee in a state-sponsored residency program. This fee-exempt registration can only be used for official duties, which includes any duties performed as part of your residency training.
You must maintain a UW-connected DEA registration active through June 30, (or your final day of residency if different.) This can be either your current, fee-exempt registration or a new, fee-paid DEA registration, but it must have the UW or SCH workplace address on it.

Fee-Paid or Fee-Exempt
Transferring to a UW Residency or Fellowship
If transferring directly to a UW fellowship or residency, (e.g. Child Neurology,) you may continue to use the current, fee-exempt registration. You should update your contact information with the DEA to reflect the address for your new program to ensure you receive renewal forms and other documents.
If your new program allows MOONLIGHTING, you may wish to apply for a fee-paid DEA registration anyway. Your fee-exempt registration would not cover activities that are considered outside your official duties.

Starting a New Job or Non-UW Training Program
You must get a fee-paid DEA registration before you begin working anywhere, other than in a fellowship or residency program. For non-UW training residencies and fellowships, check with your new program to determine what type of registration is required or recommended.
DEA registrations are state and site specific. If you will be working in another state, you will need a medical license in that state before you will be issued a new DEA registration. Also note that some states require an additional state-administered controlled-substance permit.

Timing
If your current DEA registration expires between NOW and June 30, you may switch from a fee-exempt to a fee-paid registration when you apply for renewal IF your full medical license has been issued. If your license has not been issued within 1 month prior to your DEA expiration date, you should renew the fee-exempt registration and apply for a fee-paid registration when you receive your full license.
When you apply for a new DEA registration, you will be issued a new DEA number. However, your current registration is NOT automatically cancelled. It is legally permissible to have these two overlapping registrations. You may continue to use the fee-exempt registration until it expires or until the end of residency, whichever comes first.
IMPORTANT NOTE: If you choose to switch to a fee-paid DEA registration when you renew and before you graduate, make sure you change your workplace address on your DEA registration after June 30. Changes can be made using the DEA Registration/Application Update Request site.

Fee-paid DEA Registration Application
Apply online at the DEA website for your new, fee-paid DEA registration. The fee is currently $888, which covers a period of three years.
