Required Subspecialty Electives
The Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education (ACGME) requires that, over the course of training, Pediatrics residents complete rotations in seven different subspecialty electives. Four must be from the ACGME’s list of “key” subspecialties (List A). The remaining three can be from either List A or from a list of additional subspecialties (List B).
4 Electives from List A
+ 3 Electives from List A or B
= 7 required subspecialty electives
Each elective can be taken only once during residency. If you wish to repeat an elective, you will need to get approval from the Residency Director or the Chief Residents.
B Electives
- Child Psychiatry
- Clinics
- Craniofacial Medicine
- Neurodevelopmental Disabilities*
- Ophthalmology*
- Otolaryngology*
- Palliative Care*
- Radiology
- Rehabilitation Medicine
- Sleep Medicine*
- Sports Medicine/Orthopedics
- Surgery*
- Wilderness/Sports Medicine
* Requires pre-planning with the Chiefs and program directors
Other Elective Rotations
Elective rotations not on Lists A or B may be taken as your schedule allows but do not count towards the ACGME’s 7 elective requirement. Unless otherwise noted, these electives require pre-planning with the Chiefs and program directors, a written elective proposal, a letter of commitment from the mentor/training site, and an elective synopsis following the rotation.
If you are interested in doing an Other elective that is not listed below, you must email Crystal Gonzalez-Guzman (Crystal.Gonzalez-Guzman@seattlechildrens.org) to get that process started. Please note that it takes at least 4 months to get the appropriate contracts and paper work in place for a new elective so plan accordingly.
- Global Health Leadership (UW)
- Environmental Health
- Innovation Elective
- Medical Informatics
- Pain Medicine
- Procedures
- Research
- Teaching
