NATURE OF ORGANIZATION
This position is within the Applied Environmental Biotechnology lab group under the leadership of Dr. Heidi Gough, within the School of Environmental and Forest Sciences. The lab group is cross-disciplinary, and includes microbiologists, environmental scientists, and engineers focused on harnessing microbial consortia to influence biotransformation of pollutants in soils, wetlands, and waste treatment systems.
DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
Duties will be commensurate with level of experience, and are expected to include: preparing microbiological media, monitoring research bioreactors, operating laboratory equipment, extracting mixed-community DNA from environmental samples (soils and sludge), collecting samples for laboratory timed experiments, tracking and managing research data (in EXCEL and R), and participating in lab group meetings. On-the-job training is provided. The duties of the position have potential to expand as the experience of the worker increases. Position requires navigating staircases and lifting up to 40 lbs.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
The position requires in-person work on the UW-Seattle campus. After training, and depending on the interest of the worker, the EXCEL and R data processing could be completed through tele-work (<20% of total hours, and dependent on in-person data collection). Our lab has a UW-approved COVID-safety plan in place, and the tasks in the description meet the criteria for Phase 2 in-person work. • Available to work a minimum of 10 hours per week, during normal business hours • University of Washington work study eligible student • Able to work independently to accomplish a task • Able to manage time • must pass required safety training and be able to follow safety protocols in the lab • Able to work safely with bacterial cultures (non-pathogens) and with chemicals. Additional preferred skills: EXCEL, WORD, R, Canvas, Library Skills. Preference given to applicants that are available in the summer term, and who expect to be able to continue work in the academic term.

Highest benefits will be for students studying environmental science, bioresource engineering, environmental engineering, microbiology, or similar field. The successful application will gain experience working on current research and knowledge on the inner workings of a cross-disciplinary research lab.

Seattle Department of Transportation has an opening for a Data Science Intern to start early next year. Both undergraduates and graduates are welcome to apply.

Desired skills: Experience with GIS, Tableau, databases, programming (R, VBA, Python, C# or other), APIs, or advanced Excel are helpful but not required. The most important quality is a detail-oriented student who is open to learning about how SDOT deals with transportation data.

Cornell’s Systems PhD is Accepting Applications

Systems at Cornell University is currently accepting applications for PhD students to begin the program in August 2020. The application deadline is January 15th. Students with interest in the following research areas will have first consideration and are encouraged to apply here:

  • Quantitative modeling of energy systems, and/or interconnected infrastructure systems. Knowledge of energy markets is also useful. Background in electrical engineering, industrial engineering, applied mathematics, or operations research is recommended. Click here for additional information.
