It’s Time to Register for Winter Quarter 2023

Dear University of Washington Students,

Winter quarter 2023 registration begins Friday, November 4.

To get started with registration, review your academic plan for winter quarter 2023 and seek guidance from an adviser if you need assistance. Then, sign into MyUW and complete your pre-registration steps before your estimated priority registration date.

Important Reminder: Set up and opt in to 2FA before winter registration

Before winter quarter 2023 registration begins, the UW will require two-factor authentication (2FA) for your UW NetID account to protect both your and the University’s information. With 2FA, you sign in first with your UW NetID and password, then use a 2FA device (such as your smartphone) to confirm your identity. If you have not set 2FA up before registration for winter 2023 begins November 4th, you will not be able to register or access UW online systems. Graduating autumn quarter and/or not planning on registering for winter 2023? You still need to set up your 2FA to use any UW online system after November 2nd.

Don’t wait — “lock down your login” today with the Duo Mobile app for 2FA Continue reading

Looking forward to in-person instruction beginning 1/31/22

Hello CEE Students,

We look forward to welcoming you back to largely in-person instruction next week. As messages from UW President Cauce and Provost Richards have said, we realize that on-going impacts of COVID may make it necessary for you to miss class at times during the remainder of the quarter. Faculty will accommodate these absences, but please reach out to advising staff or to me, earlier rather than later, if you need additional support once we shift to largely in-person instruction.

President Cauce and Provost Richards have encouraged you also to “level-up” your COVID protection with KN95, KF94, N95 or surgical mask, and the university is making these available to you (details will be posted to uw.edu/coronavirus this week). Double masking with a surgical mask beneath a cloth mask is considered a good approach to improving COVID protection. CEE will provide you with a reusable cloth mask and with surgical masks, as needed; both are available in More 201.

We look forward to seeing you, in person, next week.

Covid Crisis in India

President Cauce’s most recent blog post is about the importance of caring for the UW community through the current Covid crisis in India.
The current Covid situation in India is terrible. Death rates are high, medical care and supplies are in short supply, and many cities and states are under lockdown. Like many crises, Covid’s impacts reflect existing inequalities. While Covid has hit low-income communities especially hard, it is impacting everyone.
Many people in the CEE community are from India or have close personal or family ties. So many families have lost loved ones. The human toll is heartbreaking and scary.
For those in our community impacted directly: you are in our thoughts. You have our support.
President Cauce’s blog lists resources.
If you are interested in giving money, UW provided a list of organizations working on Covid relief in India.
CEE’s institutional connections with India include that dozens of CEE students have spent their Winter Quarter studying and working with organizations in Bangalore, via the Grand Challenges Impact Lab (GCIL). Professor Hossain works with marginal farmers in North India and I (Julian) work on indoor and outdoor air pollution in India. As a further opportunity to provide on-the-ground financial support, an outstanding organization CEE GCIL students have worked with in Bangalore, Hasiru Dala, is fundraising for their Covid relief work.
Our department invites everyone to be mindful of how the current crisis in India is impacting members of our community. We hope everyone will be there for each other.
If we can help, please reach out.

Autumn Quarter Planning and Vaccine Eligibility Updates

A message from Department Chair Laura Lowes:

All, I hope that your spring quarter is off to a good start. You will have noted in Provost Richard’s recent message that all member of the UW community who are able to get vaccinated are expected to do so. Provost Richard’s message provide links to a couple of websites where you can find vaccination appointments. For those currently residing in WA state: UW Medicine and other locations and for all: vaccination opportunities in the United States. CEE faculty and staff also recommend https://www.covidwa.com/.

Looking forward to vaccinations enabling life at UW and around the world to get back to normal someday soon.

Racist Crimes Against Asian and Asian American Communities

A message from Department Chair Laura Lowes:

CEE community members,

Most of you have heard of the terrible events in Atlanta last week, when a gunman shot and killed eight people, including at least six women of Asian descent. We grieve for their loss, and stand in support of Asian and Asian American communities.

This form of hatred and bigotry is not new; it has a long and shameful history in our nation. Nationally, anti-Asian hate crimes have increased during the past year. In Seattle, two predominantly Asian American churches have repeatedly received anti-Asian hate messages, including an incident last week.

We condemn these racist attacks, we mourn the victims of these hate crimes, and we stand firmly in support of our Asian and Asian American colleagues, friends, and neighbors.

In the last year CEE has heightened efforts to create a diverse, equitable and inclusive community for all, including our Asian and Asian American faculty, students, staff, alumni and friends. If you are looking for new ways to contribute to this effort or have specific concerns that you would like to share with our JEDI leadership, please visit our JEDI website here.

This last year has been challenging for all. Hopefully, this week of spring break will provide you an opportunity for rejuvenation and renewed energy to work towards increased justice, equity, diversity and inclusivity in CEE and beyond as well as to advance your academic, professional and personal goals.
