Register for EPA’s 8th Annual RainWorks Challenge

The Campus RainWorks Challenge is a green infrastructure design competition for American colleges and universities that seeks to engage with the next generation of environmental professionals, foster a dialogue about the need for innovative stormwater management, and showcase the environmental, economic, and social benefits of green infrastructure practices. Participating teams are asked to design an innovative green infrastructure project for their campus that effectively manages stormwater pollution and provides additional benefits to the campus. EPA will award a total of $30,000 to first and second place winners in the challenge’s demonstration project and master plan categories.

We are over halfway through the registration period, but there is still plenty of time! Registration ends October 15, 2019. Entries are due December 17, 2019 and winners will be announced in Spring 2020.

Attention CEE Seniors: CESI/Transportation Capstone Updates & Info Sessions

Hello seniors:

For the 2019-2020 academic year, the Construction Energy and Sustainable Infrastructure (CESI) group in CEE will offer four separate CESI-oriented capstone projects in Spring 2019. Details on each capstone can be found in the email sent out to undergraduates earlier this week.

The transportation group will also be offering a new updated capstone, details of which will be communicated to you as we get closer to spring quarter. The transportation capstone enrollment numbers will be determined by student interest.

The combined construction-transportation capstone, as done in the past years, will not be offered for 2019-2020.

The CESI group has scheduled two information sessions so that you can ask questions about the four capstones. At these sessions, there will be no formal presentations about the four projects, only responses to your questions.

Please hold your questions for the information sessions as your advising team will also be present.

CESI Capstone Info Sessions:

  • Tuesday, October 8 – 9am in MOR 225
  • Tuesday, October 15 – 4:30pm in MOR 225

Details for Structures/Geotech, Hydrology and Environmental Capstones will also be communicated to you as we get closer to spring quarter.

Volunteers Wanted for Fluid Mechanics Conference

Several professors from UW and other local universities are organizing a fluid mechanics conference called APS DFD, to be held November 23-26 in Seattle. Detailed information on the conference can be found here: https://www.apsdfd2019.org/

Anyone interested in the areas of research covered at this conference(thermal science, structure interaction, machine learning, energy harvesting, etc. and their applications to fluid mechanics) is invited to volunteer.

Volunteering duties will include sitting through several sessions (preferably ones that interest the volunteer) during the conference with a walkie-talkie to alert IT personnel if issues arise with audiovisual equipment. In exchange, the volunteers get free registration and may attend the whole conference if they wish.

Anyone interested should email Nate Machicoane (nmachico@uw.edu) with a list of ~8 sessions they’d be interested in volunteering for (the plan is for each volunteer to do 4-5 sessions). A full list of sessions can be found here: http://meetings.aps.org/Meeting/DFD19/SessionIndex2
