Steer has been commissioned by The Washington State Department of Transportation (WSDOT) to promote the Small Business Transit Subsidy, and we are recruiting a team of Business Advisors to perform direct outreach to small businesses as a part of the program.

Our Business Advisor team will conduct the one-to-one outreach to small businesses through end of April 2019 and encourage them to take advantage of the incentive through ORCA Business programs. Advisors will reach out to small businesses through in-person visits, email, phone, and by participating in community-based events. Team members will discuss local transportation options, the benefits to employees, and advise small businesses on the different ORCA Business programs.

Expectations of Duties

Interns have the opportunity to work in both our Planning and Design groups. The candidate will work directly with experienced engineers under a Project Manager on various private development and public projects.

Planning: Duties may include traffic analysis of intersections and roadways, parking demand analysis, field reconnaissance to capture multi-modal conditions, prepare traffic impact studies.  Candidate will manage multiple tasks working with teams, and develop strong communication skills in technical writing and presentation of transportation analysis and recommendations.

Design: Duties may include preparing plans, specifications, cost estimates, schedules, and permit applications for projects.  The candidate may also assist in performing construction administration duties including site visits, construction coordination meetings, and inspections.

NASA Earth/Atmospheric Science Internship

NASA Student Airborne Research Program (SARP) 2019

The NASA Airborne Science Program invites highly motivated advanced undergraduates to apply for participation in the 11th annual NASA Student Airborne Research Program (SARP 2019).  Students will work in multi-disciplinary teams to study surface, atmospheric, and oceanographic processes. Participants will fly onboard the NASA DC-8 and assist in the operation of instruments to sample and measure atmospheric gases and to image land and water surfaces in multiple spectral bands. Along with airborne data collection, students will participate in taking measurements at field sites. Each student will complete an individual research project from the data collected. Outstanding faculty and staff for this program will be drawn from several universities and NASA centers, as well as from NASA flight operations and engineering personnel.

The eight-week program begins June 16, 2019 and concludes August 9, 2019.

Instrument and flight preparations, and the research flights themselves, will take place during the first two weeks of the program at NASA’s Armstrong Flight Research Center, in Palmdale, CA. Post-flight data analysis and interpretation will take place during the final six weeks of the program at the University of California, Irvine.

SARP participants will receive a $5,000 stipend, a travel allowance, and free housing and local transportation during the 8-week program.

GAANN PhD Fellowships in Advanced Infrastructure Systems-Carnegie Mellon University

CMU CEE PhD GAANN Fellowships Available for Advanced Infrastructure Systems for Transportation and Water

We are recruiting applicants for a new interdisciplinary PhD Fellowship program in Advanced Infrastructure Systems (AIS) sponsored by the U.S. Department of Education through the Graduate Assistance in Areas of National Need (GAANN) program. Our AIS graduate program brings advancements in technology in computing, sensing, data analytics, and automation technology into the design, construction, operation, and management of infrastructure.

Our GAANN PhD Fellowship program will train a cohort of U.S. PhD students to be leaders in developing, deploying and integrating advanced technologies with the goal of modernizing U.S. transportation and water infrastructure in innovative ways. We define transportation and water infrastructure broadly, which includes but is not limited to the following infrastructure systems: roadways, bridges, tunnels, buildings, pipelines, drinking water systems, wastewater and stormwater systems, as well as traffic and water quality management.

We seek applicants with a range of engineering and science backgrounds, at either the BS or MS level, to be part of the next generation of technology leaders in civil and environmental engineering.

Fellows will receive a full research assistantship including tuition and an annual stipend of up to $34,000. In addition, our GAANN fellowship program will provide professional development opportunities including engagement with companies and researchers in smart-cities technology from across the U.S., and supervised teaching training and experience.
