Seattle City Light – Student Engineer Internship Opportunity

Seattle City Light, a department of the City of Seattle, is one of the nation’s largest municipally owned utilities in terms of the number of customers served. Over the years we have worked very hard to keep Seattle’s electricity affordable, reliable, and environmentally sound. Today, City Light is a recognized national leader in energy efficiency and environmental stewardship

Seattle City Light’s Generation Operations & Engineering Business Unit (GOE) is looking for a
Student Engineering Intern to join the Structural Engineering (SE) group. Although the Structural Engineering group is part of GOE, the group performs structural and civil engineering design for the entire utility, not just generation projects. There is a broad array of technical work the SE group performs, including structural calculations, design, inspections, and studies of hydroelectric plants, electrical transmission lines, distribution infrastructure,
and substation facilities.

This position will report to the Structural Engineering Supervisor and will report out of the Seattle Municipal Tower in Downtown Seattle.

Interested students can apply online here: https://www.governmentjobs.com/careers/seattle/jobs/2227485/student-engineering-intern-structural/

Winter 2019 updates (CEE 457, CEE 424, TE and UD Electives, etc.)

Hello CEE majors (especially seniors):Just a quick update on matters that may impact or influence your winter quarter course selection.

  • CEE 457 Advanced Structures (3cr): This class is in the process of being moved to MWF 12:30 to 1:20pm.  Its current time conflicts with IND E 315, which many of the seniors also need to take.    IND E 315 will fill up quickly, so when in doubt, register for that and we can help you to add CEE 457 later.

  • CEE 424 Geographic Info Systems (3cr) : This has been added as a Technical Course List for both the BSCE and BSENVE majors.   For the BSCE, it will satisfy the Construction Core.

  • CEE 465 Data Analysis in Water Science (4cr): This has also been added to the Technical Course List for both the BSCE and BSENVE majors.   For the BSCE, it will satisfy the Environmental Core.

  • BSCE Upper Division Engineering & Science Electives list is currently being updated to include the following courses:
    • ARCH 487 Fundl’s of Building Info Modeling
    • CM 335 Sustainable Construction
    • CM 414 Virtual Construction
    • CM 426 Preconstruction Techniques
    • ENV H 462 Technical Aspects of Occupational Safety

  • BSENVE Upper Division Engineering & Science Electives list is currently being updated to include:
    • CM 331 Construction Estimating

Freshmen, Sophomore, and Juniors:

  • If you have space in your schedule, you can consider CEE 291 AutoCad (2cr) — This is offered each academic year quarter, and it’s a good skill to have – not just a intro to computer-aided work, but to learn how to read and interpret computerized drawings.

Satisfying your Additional Writing Requirement: W by Arrangement

Hello,
We have been receiving a number of emails and questions from students about satisfying the 4cr of additional writing.

There are a number of ways to satisfy this requirement:

  • The first option would be to find a course designated as “W” on the time schedule/MyPlan course search. If you are still in need of a DIV, VLPA or I&S, you may be able to find a course to satisfy more than 1 requirement.

  • A second option will be to create a “W by Arrangement” to satisfy your additional writing credits. For example, you can take one of your classes (Upper Division Elective?) and work with the professor to satisfy the “W” credit.  If the course you choose to use as “W” credits is less than 4 credits, you can also work with the professor to add a 1cr CEE 499 Independent Study project. More information on this option can be found here.  If you choose the “W by Arrangement” option, please let your us know in advance so we can support you through the process.

For more information regarding the Additional Writing Credits, including the criteria for a “W” course, and “W by arrangement” please refer to the following website: https://www.washington.edu/uaa/advising/academic-planning/general-education-requirements/additional-writing/

Please let us know if you have any questions.

Skanska Scholarship

I have been asked to forward this again to CEE Juniors since the deadline of Oct 31 is approaching.

The original email is from Aryssa Brantner who is a relatively recent grad from CEE. Her email provides details on how to apply for one of two $3000 scholarships to be given to CM or CEE students by Skanska Construction. My hunch is at least one will go to a CEE Junior (the details clearly state only Juniors need apply). And…you do not need reference letters which is a plus. And…along with the funds a guaranteed offer of a summer intern position with Skanska…that is another nice plus.
