Hydro and the Next Generation of Leaders

“Hydropower accounts for more than two-thirds of electric generation in Washington, Oregon and Idaho, and contributes significantly to the electric generation mix in Montana and California. As a whole, the Northwest relies heavily on this clean, renewable resource.” [1] In turn, the region relies on the workforce that delivers hydro products and services amid operational challenges such as environmental priorities, regulatory requirements and renewable integration.

The Hydropower Foundation and Hydro Think Tank’s sponsors are looking for bright, potential new hydro workforce entrants to apply for this opportunity. We believe that the next generation of leaders can tackle real-world problems through education and hands-on experience. Hydro Think Tank gives these students a forum for finding innovative solutions to a real hydro problem; and, it helps to show these educated and trained students the challenges and excitement of being in the hydro industry.  These students will be on their way to fill workforce gaps and solve hydro industry problems.

Flood Sensor Field Test & Deployment Intern

A community partner [with King County] is trying to hire a summer intern to help with a cool flood gaging project in the Snoqualmie valley. They are deploying a bunch of water level sensors throughout the valley to better predict/monitor roadway flooding and other impacts.”

It seems like a great opportunity to get a deeper understanding of how gages work and are implemented for flood prediction. It’s also a great experience to explore the vast Snoqualmie River basin.

Background/purpose
The Snoqualmie Valley Preservation Alliance (SVPA) is a small, grass roots nonprofit dedicated to protecting the viability of the farms, residents and businesses in the beautiful and productive Snoqualmie River Valley. The Snoqualmie River is one of the Northwest’s largest unregulated river systems near an urban area, and is also home to some of the richest agricultural soils in the country. Farmers, residents, rural businesses and commuters need more localized tools for predicting when the river will overtop at various locations, closing roads and inundating fields. Currently there is only one USGS gage within a 32-mile reach (Snoqualmie at Carnation). The SVPA is working on a project to deploy up to 20 low-cost automated gages, mostly on private lands, to provide real time data during flood events and for longitudinal trend analysis.

Required qualifications
Intern must have at least three months’ experience conducting, or have completed at least one course requiring, environmental data collection. Experience in the scientific method and demonstrated report-writing skills are also required. Valid driver’s license is required. Must be able to walk across uneven farm fields, hoist 15 pounds overhead, and carry and ascend a step ladder.
