The Tacoma Fire Department is always impressed by the student projects of the MSBA Program. This year’s predictive model using open text project was fantastic. The process the students took to develop their predictive analytics was impressive and the end-product even more so. We are grateful for their contributions to our department and helping to build more comprehensive data for the TFD CARES division.

In MSBA, I got a chance to work on a unique research project under the Livable City Year program in the government sector.  I could apply my learning from previous experience and newly learned skills from this program in the applied project. The applied project courses through all four quarters aligned very well with the phases of client requirements.  I got hands-on experience in analytics methodology, different methods, and various tools. In addition, I got exposure to multiple opportunities to work on academic projects through course work and CBA. Overall, this MSBA and real-world project experience prepared me very well for the corporate work position.

I would like to start by thanking my loving husband- “Veera Velagapudi”5-year-old cute daughter, and family members who supported me throughout and helped me in creating my experiences as lovely as I could imagine. I am also very thankful to the Professors, Advisors, and my applied project Team that has nurtured me, to the difficult times that trained me to fight my own battles. Being a student at this University has given me the opportunity to work on applied projects. It helps me in studying the insights on how to apply analytics to solve practical problems. Though we had the zoom lectures; I strongly say that the program is very well organized. This course helped me to learn a lot about Data Analysis and would recommend it to every Master’s student who is looking for a life-changing opportunity. Cheers to all of #classof2021, we did it during a world Pandemic!!

My background is in program administration where making critical decisions is a daily part of making impact. Though the purpose of business analytics might not be obvious, in my wheelhouse of work, it is undeniably useful as I further how data insights are both interpreted and integrated into how decisions are made. The MSBA program has well-fed my skillset as a critical thinker, problem solver, business professional, and fearless data analyst. I now feel prepared to further my career and further work important to me by integrating data analytics.

The Emerging Role of Women and BIPOC in Data & Analytics
Our panelists will share their paths into the field of data and analytics while highlighting the barriers to entry for women & BIPOC, including what’s at stake when the racial and gender composition of a company doesn’t match up with the population it surrounds. The panel will also discuss the impact of discrimination through data models and algorithms, and how data scientists can work towards more equitable and inclusive data science communities and applications. 
There will be a Q&A session at the end of the panel. Please send your questions to mcba@uw.edu.

Gauri Patil is a Master of Science in Business Analytics (MSBA) candidate at UW. She holds a bachelor’s degree in Engineering from the University of Mumbai, India, and a certificate in Data Analytics from UW.
She has over seven years of experience working on technical projects in the finance, non-profit, and technology domains. In her MSBA project for the City of Lynnwood, she applies her business analytics and data science learning on an innovative research project, Lynnwood Park System’s Usage Analysis. She volunteers with two non-profits that work for hunger, poverty, and women empowerment cause. She has worked with Tata Consultancy Services for four years to solve client’s business problems and implement new functionalities.
She serves as co-vice president for Analytics Innovation Club at Center for Business Analytics and student representative for DEI Council at Milgard’s School of Business – UW.

Jessica Schlicher MD MBA is a family physician and the medical director for Virginia Mason Franciscan Health Mission Control and Virtual Hospital. Her interests include caring for patients of all ages, virtual patient care, clinically applied analytics, and evidence based medicine. She also works as a clinical preceptor at the Northwest Family Medicine Residency Program in Bremerton, WA. Krystal Tsosie (Diné/Navajo), MPH, MA, is currently completing her PhD in Genomics and Health Disparities at Vanderbilt University. As an advocate for Indigenous genomic and data sovereignty, she co-founded the first US Indigenous-led biobank, a 501c3 nonprofit research institution called the Native BioData Consortium. Much of her current research centers on ethical engagement with Indigenous communities in precision health. She also incorporates biostatistics, genetic epidemiology, public health, and computational approaches to cancer health disparities, particularly in women’s health. At the laboratory bench, she developed and patented a combined targeted ultrasound imaging and chemotherapeutic drug delivery device for treating early metastases in cancer. Krystal’s research and educational endeavors have received international media attention in such outlets as The Washington Post, NPR, New York Times, The Atlantic, Forbes, Boston Globe, among others.

Lindsey Grays is the Executive Coordinator overseeing all the priorities of the President of the Gender Equality Division at the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation. In this role Lindsey has program and project management responsibilities, particularly around division culture and division processes.  She obtained her Bachelor of Arts degree in English Literature from Spelman College in Atlanta, Georgia and is currently pursuing her Master of Science in Business Analytics (MSBA) from the University of Washington’s Milgard School of Business (Tacoma, WA). Her MSBA research has been focused on how to optimize technology’s impact on a small-sized non-profit organization to strategically increase individual donor giving by using advanced tools meant to visualize existing data and forecast trends to inform future decisions. Prior to joining the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, Lindsey was an Executive Assistant at Amazon Web Services (AWS) on the Public Relations and Analyst Relations Team where she supported the team’s Global Communications Director and both organized and managed global events.

The mission of Lynnwood Parks, Recreation & Cultural Arts (PRCA) Department is to create a healthy community through people, parks, programs, and partnerships. To do this, the PRCA sought to adopt an alternative level-of-service methodology that equitably improves access to quality parks and trails for all residents. Working with this team helped make this goal possible.


By analyzing location-based data, this team of MSBA student consultants identified park utilization, demand, and capacity patterns in Lynnwood. Their focus areas involved analyzing park and trail users, annual/seasonal trends, demographics, and park amenities. They used analytical tools like Tableau, PowerBI, R, SQL Server, SSIS, Azure ML Studio. This type of project is the first of its kind and an exciting proof of concept of how data analysis can fundamentally change how municipal parks departments around the country can better serve their communities.

Tacoma is a mid-sized urban port city and the county seat of Pierce County, Washington, United States. The project will assist the City’s HR department’s ongoing efforts to fulfill strategic plan objectives, and support the City’s Equity and Empowerment Framework. The main goal of this project was to create a usable, well-structured, and predictable visualization tool for the City of Tacoma’s HR Department which would allow them to automate reporting and enhance workforce management. This solution will incorporate Tableau as the visualization tool. The team incorporated additional value-added proof of concept analytic solutions to present the City of Tacoma with future opportunities.

Washington State’s salmon population needs help. Salmon are culturally significant in the Pacific Northwest and are a keystone species. The Washington Department of Natural Resources believes there is an opportunity to restore the salmon population by preserving watersheds on forest land, which is part of the salmons natural habitat. This team has developed an analytics solution to assess the land conversion risk of forest land currently owned by small forest landowners. With this tool, the Department of Natural Resources can allocate resources to those landowners to help mitigate small forest land conversion.

This group of students partnered with Sound Credit Union for their Applied Project. Sound operates 28 branches throughout the greater Seattle and Tacoma region and offers over 100 products and financial services to community members. Their work centered around understanding branch operations and what makes a branch successful. As such, their primary objective analyzed profitability to determine which variables have the most impact on successful branch performance through dashboard displays. Their secondary objective was to a create predicative model to understand which variables are most highly correlated to successful branch performance. Their final objective was to create a prescriptive model that could be implemented to improve branch profitability and to predict the profitability of a future branch.

Metropolitan Appliance is a locally owned retail supply store that sells and installs kitchen appliances throughout the Puget Sound region. The project goals and accomplishments consist of three sections:

– Improving customer satisfaction of Metropolitan Appliances by constructing a repository data space for the post-showroom consultation data and automating the gathering process for the survey data.

– Improving employee performance on the showroom floor by building an analytics dashboard that measures the customer conversion ratio and employee performance.

– Improving the strategic sales plan for the showroom by building a web-based machine learning product recommendation tool.

The City of Tacoma Fire Department’s CARES program provides community members with assistance for non-emergency calls. The purpose of this team’s project was to create a prototype predictive model to predict future behavioral health call volumes. Their solution has two parts: a text classification model, and a predictive regression model. The text classification model uses a sample of manually reviewed calls to classify recent TFD 911 calls as behavioral health or not. They used this new variable in the regression model to forecast how many behavioral health calls TFD can expect in the future.

The ideal-state vision for Communities In Schools of Tacoma (CIST) is to offer community resources inside of public schools, where they are accessible, coordinated, and accountable.

Together, CIST and the Applied Project Team explored the opportunities within CIST’s constituent data to further its efforts to uphold this ideal state vision, by focusing on increasing individual donor funding. The opportunity is to create an interactive dashboard that visualizes donor information to gain insights about individual donor behavior to then be leveraged within future funding campaigns.

Over the course of the year, the team developed a solution by using the agile methodology, creating a robust data architecture, and revealing exciting insights about CISTs donor landscape that will strategically inform the future of their fundraising.

In response to COVID-19 and the resulting recession, the City of Puyallup reached out to UWT CBA’s MSBA program to gain a better understanding of their sales tax revenue in order to find ways to increase their economic resilience to recessions. The team performed descriptive, diagnostic, predictive, and prescriptive analytics to help the City gain deeper insights into their data. The descriptive and diagnostic analytics performed include the creation of a sales tax revenue dashboard and several demographics dashboards in Power BI. Predictive and prescriptive analytics include a sales tax revenue prediction model and a Q&A chatbot.
