PGY2 Infectious Diseases

Program Description

The PGY2 Infectious Diseases (ID) Pharmacy Residency at UW Medicine is a ASHP-accredited PGY2 program, which provides twelve months of training designed to develop and refine the skills necessary to make and monitor therapeutic interventions for the safe and efficacious use of drug therapy in patients with infectious diseases.

The rotations range from traditional inpatient ID consult services to outpatient hepatitis/HIV clinics and emergency medicine rotation focused on antimicrobial stewardship.  The diverse patient populations at UW hospitals and multitude of seasoned clinicians sets this program apart from others. There are rotations in specialty areas such as solid organ transplant ID and oncology/bone marrow transplant ID. Experiences in pediatric infectious diseases may be available as well at nearby Seattle Children’s Hospital. To keep the resident well-rounded, they also spend time at Valley Medical Center or UWMC-NW campus to navigate the nuances and challenges that a smaller, community hospital offers.

The resident will develop a research project designed to improve pharmaceutical care services for patients with infectious diseases.  The resident actively participates in teaching students, residents, and pharmacists during their residency. The resident works closely with a multidisciplinary team while on clinical rotations. The participation in the Center for Stewardship in Medicine program is a unique and rewarding experience. The program includes participants from the Pacific Northwest region and beyond and includes a weekly tele-stewardship session that includes relevant ID didactic lectures and discussion of cases submitted by the participants. The CSiM community includes pharmacists and infection preventionists from critical caccess and rural hospitals. The resident will actively participate in the CSiM program by providing lectures and coaching participants.
