Wellness Corner – March 15th, 2022

Dear Wellness Community,

This beautiful painting (at right) is by Maria Prymachenko, Ukrainian folk artist. To me it feels like spring, and indeed, UW’s cherry blossoms are getting ready to pop (check the bloom status here and visit when they open).

We’ve all been holding the suffering of the people of Ukraine in our hearts. If you’d like to donate, you can chose an international organization like MSF or Save the Children or something more targeted like United Help Ukraine. It’s important to recognize that all over the world there are people who are hungry, displaced and traumatized by war torn environments, and that news coverage doesn’t reach them all equally.

We can’t divide ourselves too thinly, so if you are feeling helpless in the face of world wide strife, you might consider taking up loving kindness meditation and focusing your energy and action towards doing good in your own sphere of influence whatever that means for you.

Perhaps it’s bringing a neighbor a treat, calling your mom, or spending a couple extra minutes at bedside for a patient in need. You can dedicate these acts of care to far away people in need, and know that we can only do what’s available to us today. You’ll need to rejuvenate to be able to give from a sense of abundance, which means that fun and relaxation also factor into a wholistic plan to care for others.

Wellness Corner – December 21st, 2021

Dear Wellness Community,

Can’t believe it is time to bid goodbye to 2021 and what a year it has been! This year began with some fears and uncertainties and then, for some, a sense of renewed hope.

Most of us got vaccines and boosters too, schools reopened, we were able to gather for summer outings and feast together at Thanksgiving. Sadly, news about the Omicron variant has brought up some uneasiness – it seems like we are in flux again.

Through these changes, we continue to appreciate the sacrifices you make and your tireless work to keep our communities safe. Thank you!! (My dog Kobe is at the right bringing you holiday cheer!)

As we share the warmth and lights of the holidays amid the short, darker days of winter, we are reminded of the ups and downs we all experience. I look forward to enjoying some quiet moments, watching movies, trying out some fun recipes and perhaps reading that book I have wanted to pick up for a while.

This month’s issue has info on fun events in the next month, places to check out holiday light displays, books to read, food to eat, and opportunities to give back. What are some seasonal gifts you look forward to? Be well and we wish you all a very happy holiday season and healthy 2022!

Dipti

P.S. Some good news! We are excited to share that the Wellness Team will increase capacity by adding a fourth Wellness counselor! We will post the job soon, so if you know of someone that may be a good fit or have questions, please have them reach out to me at: diptic@uw.edu.

Wellness Corner – November 16th, 2021

Dear Wellness Community,

With the last weeks of 2021 ticking down, I’ll offer a deep bow of gratitude to our whole community of hard working people, especially those of you caring for folks through days when you’d love to rest or join your own loved ones in celebration. Thank you for serving your patients so well!

It’s a season that inspires giving. In honor of Native American Heritage month and Thanksgiving, you might consider making a gratitude donation to a favorite organization. If you need ideas check out NARF or this super cool campaign to relieve medical debt – RIP Medical Debt – where $100 of your dollars will relieve $10,000 dollars of debt! (My mom found this one – thanks Mom!)

We’ve suddenly found ourselves in the darker days of the year, but by no means does that have to be bad news! This is the time to don your coziest (or tackiest) sweaters, curl up with a good read, eat warm foods, and laugh with friends. As the Seattle saying goes, there’s no bad weather, only bad gear! So bundle up and find some outdoor fun too. You’ll find ideas for all these delights and more in this month’s issue. Enjoy!

Halloween Play Day at Kelsey Creek Farm

We had a fantastic time at Kelsey Creek Farm with our GME parents and kiddos! The sun was out, the costumes were festive, and we had sprinkles in our hot chocolate! My personal favorite moment was meeting the very friendly sheep “Bob” and “Sean” (who were each over 300lbs! and one of whom is pictured at right…) We learned that the oil on their wool – helpful in keeping the rain off – was lanolin oil, so now you have that fun fact to file away. See more pictures here!

GME Counseling to Remain on Zoom for Now

GME Wellness will continue to offer counseling exclusively via Zoom this fall. As a team, we believe this is the best way to support our trainees under the current circumstances. The virtual platform lends itself to meeting from any location without worry about travel or parking. Also, our ability to support you and offer high quality counseling services is stronger when we can see your beautiful faces and read non-verbal clues.

We look forward to the day we can provide counseling support in person and we will  continue to re-evaluate as the situation evolves. In the meantime, please share your thoughts and feedback with us. Thanks to Natalie Brady with GME for collecting a comprehensive list of spaces at our hospitals that you may be able to use to have a Zoom session or take care of yourselves in another way. Wellness Corner – September 21st, 2021

Dear Wellness Community,

As we delight in the final days of the summer season, savor the last warmer days, beautiful sunsets over the water, gardens full of color, birds, squirrels and bunnies and taste of yummy BBQs at the park or in the backyard, there are changes on the horizon.

On my morning stroll, I see the familiar yellow school buses in the neighborhood, notice school kids getting ready for a new school year (this time in person) and trees full of apples and pears. Fall is here! Let’s take a moment to enjoy the summer activities that energized us as we step into a new season.

What will the new season bring? What can we look forward to?

In this month’s issue, we honor Hispanic Heritage month, share cool recipe ideas and some fun events in and around Seattle. You can participate in a street mural for BLM!  Speaking of new beginnings, we are pleased to welcome our newest member of the GME Wellness Team: Patty Long-Brohm. Patty’s schedule is open for new Wellness appointments.  Here’s how you can schedule with Patty.

Wellness Corner – August 17th, 2021

Dear Wellness Community,

I hope all of you are enjoying Seattle summer and soaking up the sun! In spite of suffering (without AC) on some of these hot hot days, it’s been fun to be able to swim a lot. I would highly recommend a sunset dip at Green Lake for those of you who haven’t had one yet!

There is plenty of good weather to be had, but I can also feel the swing into fall rapidly approaching, so make sure you keep chipping away at your summer bucket list. I like to put some fun things on my to-do list like “watch a sunset” or “spend a couple hours in a hammock” to make sure I reserve some time to chill. What are your fun to-do list items?

We are so excited to welcome our new wellness counselor, Patty Long-Brohm to the team! She’ll be starting in September, and will have an open schedule, so if you’re new to counseling services, please do look on her calendar for your first appointment. You can read more about Patty in her bio here!

We’ve learned that we move at different paces (all normal!) with our comfort levels during this phase of the pandemic, and in this issue, there are both in-person and virtual entertainment options, so you can pick and choose what suits you best!

  • One of the most challenging things about medical training is the lack of time beyond work demands. With the A-Tracker app, you can see just where it’s going and set goals for the future. Just like budgeting your money, but for minutes instead! Thanks Aaron Wishnick for this great discovery!
