During their time on the gastroenterology elective, residents have the opportunity to participate in clinic and also to observe procedures in the GI procedures suite. A typical schedule consists of about ⅔ clinic time and ⅓ procedure time, although experiences on the inpatient consult service can also be arranged. The central learning goals of the GI elective are to gain exposure to a wide range of gastroenterological illnesses and in-depth exposure to the outpatient management of common GI conditions including inflammatory bowel disease, chronic vomiting and chronic constipation. Residents will also receive an introduction to bowel pathology through the endoscopy procedures. Residents are encouraged to engage in self-directed learning via a range of text and on-line resources provided to them through the rotation.
