Description: Residents will work with a patient care team consisting of pediatric infectious disease fellows, adult infectious disease fellows, pediatric residents, medical students, nurse practitioners and attending pediatric infectious disease physicians. During this elective, residents will perform initial consultations and then follow patients while they are hospitalized with infectious disease problems. In addition, they will evaluate patients in the ID clinic, attend teaching rounds in the microbiology and virology laboratories and participate in teaching conferences for the ID division.

The goals of the course are:

  • To understand the diagnostic work up and treatment of infectious disease syndromes in children.
  • To understand the rationale for antibiotic choice in treatment of pediatric infectious diseases.
  • To apply concepts of microbiology and virology to clinical problems.
  • To become familiar with the available reference sources pertinent to infectious disease problems.
  • To understand the role of a consultant in the management of pediatric patients.
