Description: The Seattle Children’s Hospital Craniofacial Center is one of the largest multidisciplinary centers in the US providing team care for hundreds of children with craniofacial conditions annually. Team members include seven pediatricians with expertise in craniofacial conditions who regularly attend in outpatient and inpatient clinical settings. Although the Craniofacial Medicine elective is primarily designed as an outpatient rotation, educational opportunities are not limited to the outpatient setting. The overall goal of the Craniofacial Medicine elective is to provide trainees with information, resources, and clinical experience regarding commonly encountered craniofacial conditions such as cleft lip and/or cleft palate, craniofacial microsomia, plagiocephaly, and craniosynostosis with a focus on presenting signs and symptoms. Additionally, trainees will be expected to recognize and respond to urgent and/or severe health issues related to the underlying craniofacial condition, such as airway compromise and/or feeding issues in an infant with Robin sequence, or signs of increased intracranial pressure in a child with craniosynostosis. Pediatric trainees will be expected to attend two to three craniofacial multidisciplinary team clinics per week and craniofacial specialty clinics including the Craniofacial genetics, 22q-related disorders, and plagiocephaly clinics. Pediatric trainees will also have the opportunity to attend a variety of subspecialty assessments prioritizing clinics/studies based upon their interests and learning objectives. These opportunities include patient assessments by audiologists, clinical feeding evaluations by Occupational therapists, videofluoroscopic imaging studies, nasendoscopy/fluoroscopy to assess palatal function (Velopharyngeal Dysfunction), and review of polysomnograms. Pediatric trainees may choose to attend one or more of the following clinics: Dental/orthodontic, Sleep medicine, Vascular malformation, Microtia, and Aerodigestive. Pediatric trainees will also have the opportunity to directly observe common craniofacial surgical procedures such as cleft lip and/or craniosynostosis repair or assist with inpatient consultations. Each pediatric trainee will be paired with one of four pediatric craniofacial subspecialist who will assist with the design of an elective experience that best fits their needs.
