Description: During their time on the palliative care elective, residents will spend most of their time with the Palliative Care Team at SCH. Palliative Care primarily sees inpatient consults, but residents may also have the opportunity to participate in outpatient clinic visits. Residents’ experiences will vary depending on the clinical service, patient and family needs, and resident learning goals. Our hope is that at the end of the elective, residents will:

  1. Have more thoroughly explored how their own outlook, training, or bias impact their approach to the care of seriously ill children and their families
  2. Have a more expansive communication “toolkit,” particularly for high stakes communication, such as disclosing serious news, shifting goals of care, or discussing the end of life.
  3. Have improved confidence in recognizing and managing bothersome pain and symptoms, particularly at the end of life
  4. Have explored the profound impact our patients (particularly our sickest patients or patients that die) have on us as professionals, and have explored (and maybe even improved upon) their own self-care rituals and practices
