Description: The Community Hospital Medicine elective exposes residents to the practice of inpatient medicine in a community hospital in Missoula, Montana with a 13-bed pediatric unit, including 2 dedicated PICU beds. Residents practice in the role of an attending community hospitalist, with graduated autonomy, for 2 weeks of the 4-week elective, including taking occasional night call from home. Clinical experience includes managing medical transports from referring hospitals, direct admissions from community providers, and ED consultation, as well as inpatient pediatric cases ranging from general pediatrics to subspecialty and surgical co-management. One to two weeks of the elective consist of learning the basics of pediatric procedural sedation, and managing moderate and deep sedation in a supervised setting. Other experiences are flexible and based on the interests of the resident.  Opportunities to teach medical students and family medicine residents are also available.

Notes: The training site will reimburse residents for Montana license application fees and gas expenses for car travel from Seattle to Missoula.
