Scholarships Available to Students Interested in an Energy Career

Looking for a Scholarship, Internship, or Research Grant? The American Public Power Association (APPA) awards several types of scholarships each year to university students as part of its Demonstration of Energy & Efficiency Developments (DEED) program. Below is a brief synopsis of the scholarships they offer:

  • Ten, $4,000 Student Research Grants/Internships:
    • Ten, $4,000 student research grants/internships are awarded each year to undergraduate/graduate university students to conduct research on a project or work as an intern in conjunction with a DEED member electric utility who mentors the student. Up to $1,000 in travel funds are included to attend an applicable industry conference. A mid-project report, final report, and abstract are required. Annual Application Deadlines: February 15 and October 1
  • One, $5,000 Technical Design Project
    • DEED awards one Technical Design Project each year to a student or group of students studying in an energyrelated discipline, especially engineering students working on their senior project. The student(s) academic advisor must approve the project and a mid-project report, final report, and abstract are required. Travel expenses (up to $3,000) are included in this grant for the student(s) to present their work at APPA’s Engineering and Operations Technical Conference held each spring. Annual Application Deadline: October 15
  • Ten, $2,000 Educational Scholarships
    • These scholarships are available to high school seniors, high school graduates, and college undergraduates interested in a technical career in the electric utility industry. We support students pursuing majors that are in short supply and high demand by public power utilities. The student’s application must be sponsored by a DEED member who will act as a mentor to the student. Annual Application Deadline: February 15 and October 15

Seminar on Hypersonic Vehicle Structures

Come to the Seminar on Experiments and Simulation of Hypersonic Vehicle Structures!

Presenter: Dr. Stephen “Michael” Spottswood, Senior Aerospace Engineer, Structural Sciences Center, Aerospace Systems Directorate, U.S. Air Force Research Laboratory, WPAFB, OH.

When: 1:30 – 2:30pm, Friday Sept. 4, 2015

Where: Guggenheim Hall 204

Synopsis: The Structural Sciences Center (SSC) is a small research group within the Air Force Research Lab (AFRL) at Wright-Patterson AFB, Ohio, focusing on the analysis, experimentation and development of hypersonic hot-structures.  Hypersonics is flight greater than Mach 5, where aerodynamic heating dominates.  There have been very few successful air-vehicles to fly at hypersonic speeds, and only one, the X-15, that has done so with a “hot-structures” design.  Hot-structures, unlike thermal protection system based vehicles e.g. the NASA Space Shuttle orbiter, carry flight/maneuver loads at extreme temperatures.  The analysis and design challenges are immense, proving to be a fertile, multi-discipline research area.

Fall Quarter Ensemble Auditions

You don’t have to be a music major to join one of the School of Music’s performance ensembles. Membership in all groups is open to all UW students regardless of major. So make time to play…in a band, an orchestra, a jazz or chamber ensemble, or sing in one of our choirs, and earn VPLA credits toward your degree.

For more info and audition sign-ups, visit: http://www.music.washington.edu/ensemble-auditions

Auditions start in late September!

*Note: You can still play without an audition! Several of our band and choral ensembles are open to all performers. Follow this link to find detailed information about each area of performance.
