Position available: SUSTAINABLE TECHNOLOGY COORDINATOR, OBERLIN COLLEGE

Oberlin College invites applications for the position of Sustainable Technology Coordinator. The successful candidate will assist in the integration, development, and management of a campus-wide building energy operation system. In addition, the successful candidate will assist in the further development and management of “Environmental Dashboard,” a novel technological system that provides community residents college students, staff, and faculty with environmentally and socially contextualized real-time feedback on energy and water flows and environmental conditions through residential and commercial buildings and through cities. More information on the project can be found here. We seek a recent college graduate (or equivalent experience) with strong knowledge of computer systems and building energy management. We seek an individual with strong leadership and excellent organizational skills who is excited by the opportunity to develop and manage novel technology designed to motivate and empower citizens, students, staff, and facility operators to be smart users of energy and to take better care of the environment. SEAW Nepal Earthquake Briefing

Read on to learn about this informative and interesting briefing on the Nepal Earthquake, presented by the SEAW: 

On April 25, 2015, a magnitude 7.8 earthquake struck Nepal. The earthquake and its aftershocks killed more than 9,100 people and inflicted seer damage to many structures. Through the non-governmental organization, Global Fairness, two teams of engineers from the US, New Zealand, and Australia flew to Nepal in May to perform post-earthquake building assessments. 

Please join the Structural Engineers Association of Washington (SEAW) for an evening with the three SEAW members–Scott Douglas, Pete Opsahl, and Sabina Surana–who served on these teams in Nepal. They will share their experiences, including the nature of the work, the structures they evaluated, building failure types, and the people and conditions they encountered. They will also discuss the use of the ATC-20 post-earthquake evaluation methods in a third world country.

  • Collaborating one-on-one or in groups with students in the Engineering Academic Center (EAC) to provide academic and skills support and to assist them with meeting their academic goals in engineering quantitative pre-requisites courses: such as math (calculus, differential equations), chemistry, or physics and/or engineering fundamentals, computer science.
  • Providing explanations of appropriate quantitative and /technology concepts and techniques for a given task or assignment.
  • Helping students develop learning strategies.
  • Performing routine study center operating tasks (receiving students and visitors, taking roll call, maintaining room preparedness for studying)
  • Attending scheduled meetings and training events for academic tutors and/or facilitators
  • Assisting with EAC quantitative workshops, student’s orientations and classroom visits.
  • Assist with other tasks as required
