Read on to learn about this informative and interesting briefing on the Nepal Earthquake, presented by the SEAW:
On April 25, 2015, a magnitude 7.8 earthquake struck Nepal. The earthquake and its aftershocks killed more than 9,100 people and inflicted seer damage to many structures. Through the non-governmental organization, Global Fairness, two teams of engineers from the US, New Zealand, and Australia flew to Nepal in May to perform post-earthquake building assessments.
Please join the Structural Engineers Association of Washington (SEAW) for an evening with the three SEAW members–Scott Douglas, Pete Opsahl, and Sabina Surana–who served on these teams in Nepal. They will share their experiences, including the nature of the work, the structures they evaluated, building failure types, and the people and conditions they encountered. They will also discuss the use of the ATC-20 post-earthquake evaluation methods in a third world country.
