ASCE’s Seattle Section Awards Committee is seeking applicants for the Richard William Jones Memorial Scholarship! The maximum scholarship amount distributed annually is $2,000. UW’s Academic Support Programs is offering a service-learning seminar titled “EDUC 401: Higher Education Tutoring and Mentorship” in Winter Quarter 2016. This weekly seminar introduces juniors and seniors to tutoring, mentoring, and teaching methodologies. Students apply what they learn in class through tutoring and mentoring new transfer, freshman, and sophomore students who are transitioning socially, culturally, and academically to the UW. This is a great opportunity for seasoned students to give back to the UW by sharing their knowledge and experience.

  • Seminar meets on Mondays from 3:30-4:50 PM or from 6:00-7:20 PM
  • Tutoring takes place on campus
  • Receive 2 credits for working with one student, or 3 credits for working with two students
  • A letter of recommendation will be available upon request after completion of the seminar

2016 Collegiate Leaders in Environmental Health Internship

Now accepting applications for the 2016 Collegiate Leaders Environmental Health (CLEH) Internship!

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention’s National Center for Environmental
Health and the Agency for Toxic Substances and Disease Registry (NCEH/ATSDR) are offering a paid 10-week summer internship program for students who are passionate about the environment, interested in human health, and curious about how they are linked.

During the course of the internship, students are introduced to environmental health at the federal level through collaborative projects, experiential learning opportunities, environmental health presentations, journal clubs, field trips. brown bag lunches, and mentoring relationships at NCEH/ ATSDR. Interns will be based at NCEH/ATSDR’s Chamblee Campus and will be paid a stipend of approximately $600 a week during the course of the program. Note: Number of intern positions will depend on funds available.

Structural Engineering Travel Fellowship

The Skidmore, Owings, & Merrill (SOM) Foundation is now accepting nominations for the 2016 Structural Engineering Travel Fellowship:

The award of $20,000 is granted for independent travel and study, and is intended to foster a heightened appreciation and understanding of structural engineering through first-hand experience for the winning student. The Foundation’s goal is to instill in its fellows a heightened sense of the importance of aesthetics in structural design by offering them an opportunity to study buildings and bridges throughout the world.

If you are interested, please consult a structural engineering faculty member promptly. The Department must submit a maximum of 2 nominations for the award by the December 7th deadline. Nominees must receive a bachelor’s or master’s degree or Ph.D. from an accredited US school between July 1, 2015 and June 30, 2016.

Spring Quarter and CEE 421 and CEE 422

Course Information:

CEE 421 will not be offered Spring 2016. Instead, CEE 422 Energy and Transportation will be taught. The current class size is limited to 35 but that might be increased depending on the assigned classroom (which we do not yet know…however classroom assignments are typically easier to sort out for late afternoon classes).

Course Description of CEE 422: Introduces climate change; vehicles, energy requirements and pollution; transportation fuels; energy and power plant terminology; traditional fossil fuel, nuclear, and renewable energy plants; permitting power plants and projects. CEE 422 is being added to the Construction Core technical elective list thus it will count as taking at least one course in the construction subarea specialty (read on to see a full description of the Construction Core courses).
