Course: Integrated Sustainability Design Lab

Read on to learn about this great course:

The Department of Architecture is offering an interdisciplinary studio (Arch/CM 404) this winter quarter with two engineering design labs: Structures and Sustainability (offered for graduate and undergraduate students Arch498G/598A respectively). The course includes focused topical instruction and interdisciplinary design and collaboration.

Both Labs (3 credits each):

These three-credit labs provides a unique opportunity to develop your ability to integrate technical expertise with architectural design. You will learn how configure and size heavy timber structures within the context of an interdisciplinary design process that must balance aesthetics, cost, constructability, structure and sustainability. You will be working with an interdisciplinary team to develop an integrated proposal for a wood framed, high performance office building.

These labs are a companion to a 6 credit architectural studio (project-based design class) ARCH/CM 404.

  • Time Schedule: Mondays from 3:30-5:20 for lecture, and Fridays from 1:30-5:20 for interdisciplinary collaboration with student team members
  • Prerequisites: 2 quarters of structures courses. Junior standing (if an undergraduate)
  • To register: Undergrads register for Arch 498G, Grads register for Arch 598A
  • More Information: Email Professor Kate Simonen at ksimonen@uw.edu

Structures Design Lab: Ideal for students with a focus on structures, they will be learning how to configure and size heavy timber structures (including CLT).

Sustainability Design Lab: Ideal for students with a broad interest in building energy performance. The course will include energy modeling and integration of sustainability strategies.
