Description: Share your enthusiasm for science by serving as a Science Fair Mentor for students at Bryant Elementary School. As a Scientist Mentor, you will develop and lead a project related to your field of expertise. Once a week, you will meet with your small group of 4th or 5th graders to work on your science project and guide students in the most important parts of the scientific process: formulating a question or hypothesis, developing appropriate experiments with controlled, manipulated and measured variables, analyzing results, and drawing/communicating conclusions. This is your opportunity to share your learning and experience, be a team leader and inspire future scientists!

Prototype Funding Application Due Soon

The following announcement applies to those who are wanting to participate in the Alaska Airlines Environmental Innovation Challenge: 

Student teams that are competing in the Alaska Airlines Environmental Innovation Challenge are invited to apply for funding to build prototypes for the challenge. These funds can be used to purchase materials, rent equipment, or hire short-term workers with skills beyond the team’s capacity.

Application for Funding is due Sunday, Dec. 20th at Midnight.

U.S. Department of Homeland Security (DHS) 2016 HS-STEM Summer Internships

The U.S. Department of Homeland Security (DHS) Science and Technology Directorate Office of University Programs sponsors a 10-week summer internship program for students majoring in homeland security related science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (HS-STEM) disciplines. The program provides students with quality research experiences at federal research facilities located across the country and allows students the opportunity to establish connections with DHS professionals. It is open to undergraduate and graduate students in a broad spectrum of HS-STEM disciplines and DHS mission-relevant Research Areas.

Undergraduate students receive a $6,000 stipend plus travel expenses.

Graduate students receive a $7,000 stipend plus travel expenses.

CEE 498 A / CEE 599 Q – Advanced Remote Sensing and Earth Observation

Winter Quarter 2016, Mon & Wed 9-10:20, Friday lab (to be selected)

  • Interested in the theory and application of satellite remote sensing as a tool for environmental science?
  • Want to know the fundamentals of electromagnetic radiation, reflection and absorption, black body radiation, use of the Plank Function, satellite and sensor technology, map projections, integration of GIS data, and digital image analysis?
  • Curious about measuring atmospheric trace gasses, and cloud temperatures from space?
  • Want to quantitatively measure land cover change across landscapes?
  • Interested to learn ENVI image processing software?
  • The course is offered to both upper-level undergraduate students and graduate students (no pre-requisites but physics and GIS are helpful).
