Penn State’s Toshiba-Westinghouse Undergraduate Fellows Program

Now accepting applications for an outstanding undergraduate summer research program in the nuclear field at Penn State–the Toshiba-Westinghouse Undergraduate Fellows Program: www.mne.psu.edu/twfp

Made possible through a gift from Toshiba-Westinghouse, the Toshiba-Westinghouse Undergraduate Fellows Program is a 10-week paid summer program that provides an unparalleled opportunity for undergraduates to obtain hands-on research experience and professional development in the nuclear field at Penn State. Participants will work closely with a faculty mentor on a state-of-the-art nuclear research project, and will have terrific opportunities to network with industry representatives and participate in site visits to locations such as Three Mile Island.

The program runs from May 30th to August 4th, 2016. Fellows will receive a $6,000 stipend as well as on-campus housing. We will accept applications via our website until January 31st, 2016. Applicants must have completed their sophomore year by the start of summer 2015 and have a minimum GPA of 3.0.

DEED Scholarships Available!

The American Public Power Association (APPA) awards several types of scholarships each year to university students as part of its Demonstration of Energy & Efficiency Developments (DEED) Program. APPA is the service organization for the nation’s community-owned electric utilities. DEED is APPA’s research program that fund innovative, energy related research.   • Ten, $4,000 Student Research Grants/Internship: Awarded each year to undergraduate/graduate university students to conduct research on a project or work as an intern in conjunction with a DEED member electric utility who mentors the student. Up to $1,000 in travel funds are included to attend an applicable industry conference. A mid-project report, final report, final report, and abstract are required. Annual Application Deadlines: February 15 and October 15.
  • One, $5,000 Technical Design Project: DEED awards one Technical Design Project each year to a student or group of students studying I nan energy-related discipline, especially engineering students working on their senior project. The student(s) academic advisor must approve the project and a mid-project report, final report, and abstract are required. Travel expenses (up to $3,000) are included in this grant for the student(s) to present their work at APPA’s Engineering an Operations Technical Conference held each spring. Annual Application Deadline: October 15.
  • Ten, $2,000 Educational Scholarships: These scholarships are available to high school seniors, high school graduates, and college undergraduates interested in a technical career in the electric utility industry. We support students pursuing majors that are in short supply and high demand by public power utilities. The student’s application must be sponsored by a DEED member who will act as a mentor to the student. Annual Application Deadline: February 15 and October 15.

Mindfulness for Health Living Group: Thursdays 1:00 to 2:30 pm, starting January 19, 2016. This is a therapy group for people who want to change maladaptive behavior patterns and/or learn to manage stressors and improve life balance. The focus will be primarily on mindfulness, meditation, and yoga practices aimed at learning and practicing skills for healthy everyday living. Finding additional resources for funding a college education can seem like a daunting task for students and their families. The Washington State Opportunity Scholarship (WSOS) can help support students in their college and career goals by providing a renewable scholarship of up to $2500 to $7500 per year, for students pursuing a first bachelors’ degree in eligible high-demand science, technology, engineering, mathematics (STEM) or health care fields. This year, we will select over 1400 students from across the state to receive scholarship as well as additional professional development support.

The online application is available HERE from Monday, January 4th, 2016 to Monday, February 29th, 2016. In addition to the online application, applicants also need to submit an official college school transcript post-marked by Monday, March 7th, 2016. Please note that applicants must also file for either the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) or the Washington Application for State Financial Aid (WASFA) by Monday, March 7th, 2016.
