Summer Internship with SFMTA – Deadline Approaching!

This is a reminder that applications are closing soon for the 2016 Summer Student Internship at the San Francisco Municipal Transportation Agency (SFMTA). Applications are due by Wednesday, February 10, 2016 on their website.

Gain valuable on-the-job experience under the guidance of experienced transportation professionals. Interns will participate in transportation planning and engineering activities including:

  • Designing and implementing transportation safety improvements and multimodal complete streets.
  • Performing community outreach and engagement, responding to community requests for transportation improvements
  • Coordinating with other city agencies, contractors, and communities on transportation improvements
  • Coordinating with other city agencies, contractors and communities on transportation-related projects.

SFMTA is looking for undergraduate and graduate student interns who are interested in transportation planning and engineering.

Tool Training

Will you be needing to use power hand tools for your research project? It is required to first participate in a training course on how to use them. Read on to learn about this upcoming tool-training workshop:

There will be a shop tool training (Tool Training 1, Class B) workshop on Saturday, January 30th at 11:00 AM until 4:00 PM for students and persons who will be or think that they might need to use power hand tools for their research project. This tool training is required before using power tools on your research project. The tool training covers the use of circular saw, table saw, drill motor, etc. in and around structures lab.

Be sure to sign up before January 28th. Renewing is required every 8 months. The sign up sheet will be posted on the door room 33 (machine shop), across from the material lab, More Hall  basement. Please bring a note pad and pen/pencil.

There will be a test, pertaining to the subjects in the training, given at the end of the class–no more than two mistakes allowed. You may like to bring food/snacks/drinks for this extended session (5-6 hours at least).  Continue reading

is a municipal civil engineering consulting firm located in Skagit County, WA. They are currently accepting applications for a full-time summer civil engineering internship to work from their home office in Sedro-Woolley. This opportunity will provide the successful candidate with exposure to and experience assisting with municipal civil engineering design and construction administration projects.

Minimum requirements: 

  • Must be enrolled in and have completed two years of a Bachelor degree in Civil Engineering from an ABET accredited college
  • Familiarity with Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and AutoCAD CIV3D 2010 or newer
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills
  • Valid Washington State Driver’s License

SEAW Scholarships!

It is time once again to announce the Structural Engineers Association of Washington (SEAW) Scholarship! This year, SEAW is offering $5,000 scholarships to current college or university students studying Structural Engineering and planning to make their professional career in the practice of Structural Engineering.

Requirements:

  • Official resident of Washington State
  • At the time of application, must be currently enrolled in a program of study majoring in Structural Engineering as a senior undergraduate or as a graduate student
  • Having a commitment to making a professional career in the practice of Structural Engineering

2016 Water Regulation Workshop

Join us for an informative day on the topic of water regulations. This workshop will review several topics including: 

  • Revised total coliform rule
  • RTCR experience from a utility perspective
  • General regulatory horizon
  • Water main break protocol
  • Water system low pressure management
  • Water main disinfection for new construction
  • Changing views on manganese and regulatory horizon

Speakers are from the Department of Health, Confluence Engineering, the City of Everett and the City of Anacortes.

Registration fee is $70 for AWWA or WEF individual or utility  members ($80 after Feb. 17th). Registration fee is $985 for non-members of AWWA or WEF ($105 after Feb. 17th). 2016 Undergraduate Research Symposium–Application now open!

Read on to learn more about the upcoming 19th Annual UW Undergraduate Research Symposium: \

2016 Undergraduate Research Symposium PosterThe Symposium is a celebration of undergraduate accomplishments in research, scholarship, and creative expression in all academic disciplines. Students may present their research either in a poster session or an oral presentation session. We will also have a dedicated performance space in nearby Meany Hall for performing arts presentations and a visual arts and design showcase in Odegaard Undergraduate Library. Last year, over 1,000 students participated in this exciting event!

Greenroads Presentation on Campus

For anyone who is interested in sustainable transportation technologies and practices, there is a FREE lunch session that is co-sponsored by APWA UW Student Chapter, Greenroads, and Pactrans: 

Silver Certified Alaska Street in Tacoma, Washington.

Greenroads is an organization committed to developing practices for building roads sustainably. The executive director, Jeralee Anderson, will discuss the importance of Greenroads and how to get a project certified at this upcoming lunch session.

The entire engineering community is invited to attend, so this could be a great networking opportunity in addition to being a learning experience. Food will be provided. All students are welcome and encouraged to attend!
